Driving me mad leaving car running

Bakedpumpkin · 04/01/2025 15:38

Someone I have to share a car with every weekend leaves a 2023 plate stop/start car running to pop into shops or before leaving.

this is driving me bonkers, when I pressed off the first time she said please don’t so I haven’t again! Or am I missing some mechanical benefit of doing this.

I leave mine running in the drive when it's cold but never outside a shop even when I have a passenger. Too risky that someone might jump in and drive off.

It's their car, their rules

Pootles34 · 04/01/2025 15:50

I think it's illegal, however I also think if someone else is driving you need to pipe down or drive yourself.

You are getting a lift? FFS if you have a view on how to drive, take your own car.

It’s illegal if on a public highway and could lead to a fine. It could also lead to the car being stolen , that happens quite a bit when people do it to defrost their car.

would the prospect of a fine worry her? It’s a really dickish thing to do in my opinion but if you are getting a lift it’s not your call. Pretend that a Bobby walked past and said turn the engine off?

Well no it’s an offence so it’s not their rules!

If it's a stop start engine, it will stop once she's been stationary for 30 seconds or so you don't need to turn it off

Lambington · 04/01/2025 16:20

She sounds utterly insane. No mechanical benefit whatsoever.

I think that the OP means that the driver is disabling the stop/start function so it continues to run as normal.

Have never come across a stop/start that allows the engine to run for 30-seconds, all the ones I have driven it is almost (or is) instantaneous which is very annoying hence why I disable it.
