To tempt a carnivore with tofu?

Tofunoo · 02/01/2025 22:47

My DP is a committed carnivore but I’d like to eat more vegan/veggie food without us having to make 2 dinners when I do that. Is there any chance I can tempt him over with something deliciously tofu? I have found 2 nice recipes for tofu chilli and bolognaise but he wasn’t keen. Lots of the tofu recipes I’ve found either are deep fried or full of sugar, so not super healthy. Any ideas?!

YABU-DP will never eat vegan

YANBU- there’s hope

Tofu is rank. Why not try and tempt him with one of the many other delicious vegan foods available?

RegulatorsMountUp · 02/01/2025 22:49

Honestly tofu is rank. Meatless farms mince is good though as someone who can't stand that sort of thing I actually liked it in our most recent chilli for a change. I also hate lentils and chickpeas so don't bother trying him on those instead if he loves meat like me.

Beezknees · 02/01/2025 22:49

YABU with tofu, it's gross.

Personally as a meat eater I don't like the fake meat substitutes, the texture always seems off. I'm happy to eat veggie meals but just make them veggie, don't put fake meat in it.

Great minds think alike.

Fair enough. Any ideas?

non vegans are much more likely to enjoy mushrooms, lentils and beans than tofu.

Yes I really don’t like fake meat. Don’t mind the Linda MCCartney veggie sausages but I think they are pea protein

Deliciously tofu is an oxymoron. 🤮.

Annabella92 · 02/01/2025 22:51

You do know a carnivore is someone who eats exclusively meat. I think you mean your partner is an omnivore.

Yeah I'd prefer that. Love a mushroom.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/01/2025 22:52

My dp is a committed carnivore who won't touch a vegetable. He really liked salt and pepper tofu done in the air fryer.
Don't be afraid of frying it, it's so low fat that the extra fat won't hurt and if you're trying to tempt someone then you do have to pull out the stops a bit to make it more flavoursome.
I'm a hardcore vegan and can work my way through a block raw with just a touch of salt but I appreciate that's not for everyone ha!

He does like mushrooms but I have to have quite a bit of protein (been advised by Dr) so have to pad it out

Make a bean chillli with or without lentils or TVP mince, served with rice, tortilla chips and/or good bread and olive oil.

Impressed by your raw tofu eating!

Let him eat what he wants to eat. How would you feel if he forced you to eat meat. I'm betting you wouldn't approve. So don't do it to him.

tillyandmilly · 02/01/2025 22:53

Smoked tofu is delicious! I have it in salads-

I could do this too 😂(I don't, but I could).

I love tofu. Especially the smoked varieties. There are previous threads on here about vegan recipes that omnivores often appreciate.

Oh I agree I would never force him. I love meat too. It’s just annoying to have to make 2 dinners when I want to eat veggie/vegan

I personally find the vegan food I have tried dry .

if I wanted to eat less meat . I would increase cheese eggs.

I am trying to move away from processed foods which the substitutes seem to be and I am definitely not convinced they are healthier .

That is just how I see food .

you could do meals such as a stir fry tofu in your pan chicken in his

or vegan veggie sausages mash and veg ?

This.

Not to mention some of them can have awful digestive side effects on some people.

Dotto · 02/01/2025 22:54

Ooh if you can find a chip shop that batters deep fried Linda M sausages.. They're delish.

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/01/2025 22:54

Quorn is much nicer than tofu

With some oil, tomato, basil and seasoning it can be like a mozzarella salad almost.

Globusmedia · 02/01/2025 22:55

I love tofu. Smoked tofu and Mediterranean vegetable skewers, tofu scramble, tofu blitzed with mushrooms to make mince, tofu thinly sliced and seasoned to resemble doner meat for wraps, silken tofu used to make creamy sauces.

I'd also say don't be afraid of frying it. If you cube it, coat it in some seasoning and corn flour and fry it, it goes really crispy and is delicious in all kinds of curries, noodle dishes etc.

Interesting I’ll have to check that out. Not actually sure what it’s made of, mushrooms?
