Minni97 · 01/01/2025 01:39

Had tonight at my mums and my brother asked me 'so what's your new years resolution' in kind of a weird tone and as I need to lose a few stone I feel like he was being sarcastic and implying it should be to lose weight. Aibu?

Confused

I think the trick is to not spend time with people who wind you up and who sound a bit insane as well. Maybe that could be your New Year's resolution?!

CatSkillo · 01/01/2025 02:23

Sounds like you’re projecting maybe. But impossible to say without knowing your brother. Either way, not something to waste any time thinking about.

SnoopySantaPaws · 01/01/2025 02:25

Probably he was making a point. My brother is an arse too, You won't change him. All you can do is spend as little time with them as possible & try not to let it get to you.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 01/01/2025 02:27

Ask him in the same tone, what's yours?

whalesonthebus · 01/01/2025 02:28

It’s hard to know unless there’s a back story and/or he has form for making digs. If he was being nasty, you should look up Jefferson Fisher on Instagram for effective comebacks to insults etc.

NautilusLionfish · 01/01/2025 02:32

Unless there is a big bad backstory, somethings are really not worth a second thought. Let it zoom past you. There are more than enough things in this world to give a shit about and this shouldn't be one of them

Delphiniumandlupins · 01/01/2025 02:54

"My New Year's resolution is to not make any more New Year's resolutions"

"Resolutions are like wishes. Never achieved if you share them"

"My resolution for 2025 is to only spend time with people who enrich my life"

Pick one.

3LemonsAndLime · 01/01/2025 03:31

“I never share them, John. But no need to ask yours! Pretty obviously we all think! Can you pass the butter?”

nogginatemycat · 01/01/2025 03:38

May be you should have a new years resolution of grow a back bone and put your big girl panties on.

toomuchfaff · 01/01/2025 09:34

so he didn't say the words? your mind filled the blanks?

This is a you problem.

So you’re pretending that nobody EVERRRR hints at things without actually saying it?! That there’s only ever ONE tone of voice to say things in and nobody ever needs to read between any lines?!?

Really?!?!

This wasn’t a hint. There was no allusion to anything in particular in that question.
Op read into it because she’s sensitive about her weight.

There's reading between the lines, and there's reaching. If someone asks me what's my NYR I don't automatically goto oh so you think I'm fat?

I am fat, I'm just not sensitive about it enough to think everyone thinks im fat and assumes i need to lose weight.

OP is sensitive about their issue, that's their trigger to work on, one way or another.

AsTheLightFades · 01/01/2025 17:46

He asked a question that millions of people asked last night.
Your problem if you think that was a dig at your weight, the way you presented it was completely innocuous

KrisAkabusi · 01/01/2025 17:50

This is definitely a you issue.

Notimeforaname · 01/01/2025 17:59

Nobody mentioned your weight.
Unless he always talks about your weight, It sounds like its you who has an issue with your size.
