Our wider family of adults do a Kris kindle at Christmas. When do you think should teens join the Kris kindle? Thanks!

What's a Kris Kindle?

What's a Kris Kindle?

Like a Kris Kringle, but instead of an orange, you use a Kinder Egg.

Or an e-book

When they want to- they need to be engaged for it to be fun. You could have a 15 year old who it suits and an 18 year old who can't be arsed. But regular presents stop at 18/when you join.

I'm assuming Kris kindle like secret Santa?

Or an e-book

… maybe small bits of wood, from which you would make a larger fire

Do you mean like a Christingle? That’s the religious celebration involving a candle in an orange.

Kris Kringle is an alternative name for Father Christmas/ Santa Claus, nothing to do with oranges. And no idea what Kris Kindle is.

Secret Santa.

Livelaughlurgy · 30/12/2024 13:09

Also is it just an Irish thing? I'm reminded of a time someone on mumsnet said they "gave out" to their kids and the entire thread was people asking what they gave out.

Livelaughlurgy · 30/12/2024 13:10

See also Pancake Tuesday.

Chocolatetoothache · 30/12/2024 20:49

Yes, it’s Secret Santa 🎅🏼
What ages are the teens OP? Do they want to join in?

tilypu · 30/12/2024 20:53

A secret Santa with a kinder egg?

Does it matter if you know who gave you the kinder egg?

So confused...

No need to be confused.
There’s this thing called google?😀
If you don’t have time to look…Kris Kindle is another name used for Secret Santa.

There's also this thing called op telling us wtf they are on about.

I'm not sure how kinder eggs and oranges feature in Secret Santa... Do you? Does Google?

Except it's not, it's Kris Kringle.

TotallyTwisted · 30/12/2024 21:33

Kris Kindle. Kris Kringle. Kris Kardashian.
The words are now losing all meaning.

tilypu · 30/12/2024 21:33

I'm laughing at myself - the reply I thought was op, was just someone taking the mickey!

Never mind. As you were...

KarmenPQZ · 30/12/2024 21:39

ah man I read the title and thought it was where you all trade Kindles for the year to read each others books for free and I thought that was genius!

Osory · 30/12/2024 21:52

Yeah it's a secret santa in Ireland! Had no idea it was a local thing🤣🤣🤣

Kids are 13 to 18...

In our family it goes in waves of generations. So you might suggest they and their cousins all do it together.

I’d expect adults to still be buying teens useful gifts though to about 21 at least.

Someone was having a laugh, messing with your head there. Looks like it worked 😉

SapphireOpal · 30/12/2024 21:31

Except it's not, it's Kris Kringle.

It depends where you are, as many things do.

Deriving from a tradition, the ritual is known as Secret Santa in the United States and the United Kingdom; as Kris Kringel or Kris Kindle in Ireland; as Wichteln, Secret Santa, Kris Kringle, Chris Kindle or Engerl-Bengerl in parts of Austria; as Secret Santa or Kris Kringle in Canada and Australia; as Secret Santa, Kris Kringle, or Monito-Monita in the Philippines; as Angelito in the Dominican Republic; as Amigo Oculto or Amigo Secretoin Brazil, and as Wichteln or Julklapp in Germany. (Wikipedia)

Do they have cousins the same age OP? Would it mean they get fewer presents from extended family? Might make them reluctant to join in…
Also I think a 13 year old at least is very much still in the kid category.

MoreHairyThanScary · 30/12/2024 22:30

We do this at home with the kids and have done for several years it's one of their favourite parts of Christmas we limit to £10 ( kids are now 19, 17 and 15 )

jackstini · 30/12/2024 23:00

Ours join once they are over 18 a d earning
