To not let cars in?

Queued up in two lanes of traffic at the lights. Once you’re through the lights there’s still the same two lanes but there’s an added right turn lane and when that gets full the cars waiting to turn right will tend to block one of the straight ahead lanes.

I know this (encountered it many times) so I stay in the furtherest left lane and as the lights change green every single car in the other lane indicates to move across to my lane. Aibu to not let around 5 cars go in front of me so I’m then stuck at the red light again?

I feel like if you let one then others will also merge at the same time. One driver was really aggressive.

You don’t have to let any of them out, but I don’t understand why you’d ever need to let more than one at a time out.

Just leave one car in & let natural merging occur behind you. Never understand why some motorists get so territorial of "their" lane

This.
Let one out and let the rest merge in turn behind you

They weren’t behind me though, I had to wait for 5 or 6 cars in front of me to go through.

Are you hanging back a bit when you let these cars in? If I am letting one car merge, I drive very close behind it during the merge so it's clear I am just making room for the one car. Are you leaving a massive gap, if that many cars merge in?

ueberlin2030 · 29/12/2024 16:56

If each person in your lane let one in then traffic would still move fairy efficiently. Nobody has to let anyone in but it's nice to be nice.

FoxInTheForest · 29/12/2024 17:02

Let in one car each, I don't understand how 5 would go unless you're just sitting there stationary for ages? Or do you mean each 5 car in front let one in, in which case that's the logical merging. If them being ahead bothers you you could always go in that lane and merge next time.

suburburban · 29/12/2024 17:09

Probably one car but sounds to me like they are too important to wait their turn so try to push in at last minute

Ablondiebutagoody · 29/12/2024 17:19

Just let one in is the usual form around here

PeppyGreenFinch · 29/12/2024 17:39

No, you prioritise yourself in this specific situation, If you can’t just one car then you let none in.

No but if I’m five cars behind the queue and I let in the next car at the side in front of me, the other cars in front of that one who are indicating to move over would also see this as an opportunity to do the same.

There’s no usual form around anywhere

If no one ahead of you lets a car merge then you simply keep driving in your queue of traffic until you are at the head of the queue trying to merge in and then you let one car in. No one should need to let 5 cars merge in one movement

Well some were being aggressive and trying to force their way in

Yes I know what you mean

Cfs normally

Onabench · 29/12/2024 18:18

Just let one car in and keep moving. If you sit stationary, they will think you're giving them permission.

Marine30 · 29/12/2024 18:21

In Australia years ago I saw a road sign that had a large picture of a zip with something along the lines of feed in as a zip - i.e. one from main line, one (only) from feeder line.
it was a lot catchier than that but seemed fair - make like a zip is how I always play it.

PurpleGoose · 29/12/2024 18:31

I would go through the lights and then allow a car to merge in. I wouldn't let a car across at the lights themselves through (as I'm about to go through because they've turned green)

Just keep close behind the one you let in, unless they move like a snail then sit still after merging in then the others 5 wont be able to get in infront

SapphireOpal · 29/12/2024 18:41

So you're letting a random car next to you in rather than the one at the front?

I think I need a diagram - I don't understand how this is happening!

TimeForTeaAndG · 29/12/2024 18:48

I get what you mean, OP. Just don't let anyone move over if it means you will end up on another red light. Ignore the aggressive twats, if they're behind folk turning right then they'll presumably get through on the next light cycle cos their lane will clear.

Traffic lights management just seems to be shit everywhere, timed cycles rather than taking into account actual traffic volume just leads to massive queues. I used to sit in a bus on my commute where the lights would change to green but the lights ahead of us were still red and by the time that traffic moved our lights would get one or 2 cars through then change back to red!
