My DDad has given my Dniece his old iphone. She is only 6. Aibu to think its silly. She already acts older than her age and my Dsister says its getting worse

Yup

Very

WashingMachineCrisis · 26/12/2024 00:31

Depends what she’s using it for. Lots of 6 year olds will play age appropriate Roblox games on a phone. So long as she’s monitored I don’t see a problem 🤷‍♀️

RM2013 · 26/12/2024 00:34

personally I think too young unless she’s just using it to play games and keep in touch with friends. I always waited until mine went to high school as prior to that they were always with us so I didn’t feel they needed a phone.

Frankbeverleyandthebutlers · 26/12/2024 00:37

Why would a 6 year old need a mobile to keep in touch with friends?

Marblesbackagain · 26/12/2024 00:40

That is a remarkably stupid. Society is pushing for them to be not given to 16 year olds and he gives it to a child ten years younger.

And I do judge lazy parents who give children under 11 phones.. so sick of seeing babies in buggies with a phone blaring in their face

She is six so plenty of non device ideas for her widely available.

AmethystRuby · 26/12/2024 00:42

if my DD was give an iphone at 6 i would say no thank you and give it back. theres no way i would allow that.

Meadowfinch · 26/12/2024 00:43

As long as there is no SIM in it, she can play games on it.

BerryBright9 · 26/12/2024 00:46

She does already have a tablet for games I should have added so I’m not sure what it’s for really. Apparently she’s been wanting one for months?!

Surely what a child wants and gets is controlled by the parents.

My youngest told me they want a phone but we talked about it and they know they won't get one until they are much older.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 26/12/2024 12:21

Hmm I would have assumed she was going to use it as a tablet with no sim but if she already has on I’m not sure why.
I’m sure there would be very few other six year olds she could be messaging and even if she was the messages most likely would be a struggle to read.

Shrinkingrose · 26/12/2024 12:23

As long as it doesn’t have a sim, which it won’t, and a plan, then I can’t see the issue, it’s effectively a toy.

a phone is only useful if someone pays for a plan with it. As this appears not to the the case, she will be using it like a mini tablet

doodleschnoodle · 26/12/2024 12:23

Seems a bit of an odd gift but my 5yo has an extremely ancient iPhone without a sim to play Pokemon Go when out and about with her dad so maybe it's something like that and it's for a specific purpose 🤷‍♀️

It has to have a plan connected, as no one is setting this up, she’s not messaging anyone.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 26/12/2024 12:26

Her granddad is probably thinking of it as a fun 'grown up' toy, but being close to mobile phones are not good for children whose brains are still developing.

Proteinbananas · 26/12/2024 12:27

Dwhy all dthe Ds??

No need for them if you're still going to write the full word after. Ddad just reads like you have a dstutter

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 26/12/2024 12:28
