To throw out my Christmas Tree today?

We've tried having real Xmas trees since we moved to the UK 3 years ago. I find the needle drop annoying and just another thing to faff about over Xmas time, but love the idea and the smell!

This year I got one from B&M (some serious budget constraints here and our local growers are more than 3x as much...) It has looked yellow-ish from the start, stopped smelling lovely a day after being put up and basically looks dead now. It was yellow-ish green from the get-go and I think I've got some other type of tree 🌲🤣

For the past week, if you touch it all the needles (is that the right term..?!!) fall off that branch. Baubles are falling off as they aren't supported and the floor has so many needles on it I'm leaving them there.

Do I leave it to die for 3 more days or bin the fecker today and get a fake one to go up?! Weird colour of tree photo attached!

To throw out my Christmas Tree today?

Get a fake one, we’ve never had a real one because I can’t be bothered with the faff

Ohwelljusttoday · 22/12/2024 14:00

If it that sad looking from almost the get go and especially with a few days to go, I bound bin and find a reduced Xmas tree in a high street store. Depends how important the tree being there Xmas day is to you.

Happiestwhen · 22/12/2024 14:00

Oh gosh I couldn't be dealing with having to take everything off and putting them back on another tree. I would keep it up for the sake of a few days! It doesn't look that bad to me 😊

StormingNorman · 22/12/2024 14:01

Bin and put a fake one up. I do t think it’s going to last though Christmas.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 22/12/2024 14:01

We've had to get rid of a bug infested tree on Xmas eve. Got a flocked fake tree from Tesco instead and never looked back!

In future, you need a nordman fir. They don't drop needles.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 22/12/2024 14:02

Are you keeping it well watered? I'm not a fan of those type of trees tbh, we usually get the softer needled trees that don't tend to drop as much (and don't stab you either!).

ShouldIEvenBother · 22/12/2024 14:02

Bin it OP! Sounds like a nightmare.

Get a fake one, you'll feel much better once you've got a tree where the decorations stay on it and you can look at it and enjoy it!

FanofLeaves · 22/12/2024 14:02

Most people put real ones up too early and don’t give them any kind of moisture. Who knows when the tree was actually cut before being out on display in B&M? I love a real tree but the way to do it is either don’t buy it too early- or stand it in a bucket/pot of water away from any heat source.

oakleaffy · 22/12/2024 14:03

That doesn’t look too bad, @mynamechangemyrules
But best get a non drop Nordmann fir 🌲 next year. They don’t drop needles.

olympicsrock · 22/12/2024 14:03

Your house is too warm for it. Is it near a radiator ?

HelpMeGetThrough · 22/12/2024 14:04

Fake all the way. Did the real tree for a few years and then couldn't be bothered with the mess.

We've got a fake 6 footer and it's perfectly fine for the few days it's up.

AsTim3GoesBy · 22/12/2024 14:04

It sounds like it was a bit stale when you bought it.

Did you remember to cut a couple of inches off the bottom of the trunk before bringing it indoors - and have you been keeping it watered? Also, try to ensure it's in a room that doesn't get too hot.

Basically, you need to treat a Christmas tree the same as you would a bunch of flowers: cut off the end of the stem, place in water in a cool room, make sure the water is kept topped up.

Dotto · 22/12/2024 14:06

I don't know why people are so surprised that their trees don't last, when they are putting them up weeks before actual Christmas

Cynic17 · 22/12/2024 14:06

This is because you got your tree way too early. Christmas trees should go up on 24th, and then they'll be fine and smell lovely for the whole 12 days.

Printedword · 22/12/2024 14:14

Nordman non drop and don't get it too soon is my approach. This year was 14 Dec and they come to recycle it on the 5th Jan

StrikeForever · 22/12/2024 14:14

This is my first year of a (small) real tree. I bought one in a pot. I was watering it regularly and quickly realised it was root bound (it was a long, slow task to get it to take-up any water). I re-potted it. It looks really happy now. I’ll bring it inside tomorrow and probably take it out again a day or two after Boxing Day. It’s important to place them away from any heat source and water them daily. Fingers crossed this baby does well and can be brought in again next year at least.

Wilfrida1 · 22/12/2024 14:14

And they drink a bucketful of water every day.

Happiestwhen · 22/12/2024 14:15

Ps you would be better off waiting until the 26th for a good reduction on a fake tree! They'll be half the price then that they are now!

IAmInTheBath · 22/12/2024 14:15

Do you water it every day?

Floralnomad · 22/12/2024 14:20

Bin it . Fir trees / pine trees set off my asthma / COPD so we always have artificial anyway

Wineatfiveisfine · 22/12/2024 14:34

Your tree doesn’t look that bad in that photo. But it must be very disappointing for you 😢 I hope you manage to sort something out.

We get a real tree every year - 7ft Norwegian spruce, which hardly drops.

We buy from an established tree farm and have it next to our Woodburner. Top up the water daily, never had any issues.

Kim5678 · 22/12/2024 15:15

Have you been watering it? Sounds like it was on the way out before you got it though.

Taking it all down and putting a new one up would be way more faff than leaving it, and tbh the more needles it leaves in one place the less it will leave in a trail across your house. I’d leave it and not touch it and get a fake one in the new year/Boxing Day sales for next year

mynamechangemyrules · 22/12/2024 15:18

Mine had the base of the trunk cut off about 3 inches. Then it's been watered every day but not drinking much at all. It's in a room which has no heating as I've just renovated it and not put the radiator back on!!

It was labelled Nordmann fir at B&M but their labelling is shit and it def is not the same as the ones I've bought before in this country...

I'm going to leave it to die slowly in the true spirit of Christmas 🤣 and then buy a fake one in the sales/ off Facebook for next year!

Thanks all I feel a little less pissed off about the whole episode now
