Bf doesn’t want anything for his birthday

It’s just after Christmas. For Christmas, we had a £100 budget each.
I hinted towards some present ideas and he said if I was even thinking about taking him on a city break or a night away (which I was), he doesn’t want it.

He’s had a hard year financially and did rely on me for a few months. He’s since sorted all this. We also went travelling last year and I guess we’re still building up our money again. We’ve also just started renting a place together.

im doing ok and just want to spoil him, plus we’ve always said we’d rather spend our money on adventures rather than things. But he’s outright said he doesn’t want it. He doesn’t even want a big day out.
He said he just wants a quiet day with me. He doesn’t want me to spend money on his birthday as I’ve done enough this year.

I feel a bit sad as I’m worried he doesn’t care as much about our holidays together as me. He said we can go away soon but there’s no rush.

Am I wrong to be worried about this?

plus, any ideas?… I’m thinking of cooking his favourite food and making him a cake but other than that I’m stuck!

I think you need to take what he said at face value and stop imagining other meanings.

Take him at his word - he wants to have a day just the two of you.
By all means get/make his favourite food and drink in, line up his favourite films to watch and clean up/tidy up/change your bed in advance so it's at home only nicer and then just go with the flow....

Listen to him! He doesn't want a fuss. If he wants to completely ignore it, then that's what you do.
And you can save your money for something the two of you might want to do another time, on one of the other 364 days in tje year.
