Career gap vs irrelevant job?

I was recently made redundant and given the time of year jobs are a bit sparse. There's been a few very low paid jobs I've seen that are vaguely in my industry. I've always been told it is much easier to get a job while in a job, and family are saying I should take anything I can to avoid a gap in CV.

Whereas a few friends say that would be career suicide as everyone just looks at the most recent job on an application form. So if I'm on a min wage type job (hugely below what I was doing previously) it will look bad.

So - I'm curious what people think is best (ignoring the short term financial impact since I got a decent redundancy payment)?

YABU - take any job
YANBU - wait a few months to see if there are better jobs

I’ve never known when hiring to only look at the last job, especially where redundancy is involved, it’s very common to get a stop gap job in the middle while looking for something permanent especially where it’s a specific industry where there may be big chunks of time involved in recruitment.
