Insured DSs girlfriend on my car

She is only 20 so I took out a policy with a black box. This doesn’t bother me, I’m captain sensible in the driving seat.

However the black box only applies to me, the driver with 30+ years experience and 20+ years No claim bonus. They explained that as I am the policy holder it will connect to my phone only.

I haven't told the GF this minor detail, as far as she is concerned the box magically connects to her phone and monitors her driving (she may work it out as she hasn’t had to download the app)

let’s hope she never gets in a minor shunt and you have to find out what the claims process is in terms of app registered on phone / evidence that needs to be produced.

What is your AIBU?
I had a black box on Dds car for her first year or two. I "forgot" to tell her it was no longer active and she drove very safely for the next 9 years...

Karou · 09/12/2024 10:37

AIBU to not tell her that it’s me that’s registered on the black box not her.

@JacquesHarlow if she has a shunt she is insured. She has a £600 excess so let’s hope she doesn’t need to claim.

I'm baffled that you're insuring your sons girlfriend to drive your car. If she has a bump it is going to cost you more in premiums for at least five years.
Why can't she insure herself?!

Karou · 09/12/2024 10:51

She doesn’t have a car. For various reasons that aren’t relevant it suits me for her to drive. DS doesn’t have a car licence, he has a motorbike and doesn’t really want to learn to drive a car atm.

@Karou - I'm in the same situation with DS car insurance. I, too, might have not fully explained the black box situation to him, and he may be under the impression his driving is being monitored...
I found it very strange, and had to seek clarification twice whilst discussing the policy with the insurance company. He is the main driver, but I am classed as the policy holder so will have my driving monitored, despite me only using the car occasionally!
For my other DS the black box monitored every journey, whoever was driving.

Are you within the cooling off period to cancel? If so I definitely would, having a black box is a disadvantage even if you drive well and you'll get penalised for stuff like stopping rapidly in response to a sudden hazard.

Seems so weird that they'd apply the black box to you and not her but it seems from other comments that they do that.

Wouldn't you be liable for the excess? Not much you can do if she refuses to pay.

What would you do if she said you were the one who had the accident?

The black box is probably not sophisticated enough to track different users.

Chaseandstatus · 09/12/2024 13:13

Yanbu, I’d tell my adult kids the Elf on a shelf is monitoring their driving if I thought they would believe it 😂

Karou · 09/12/2024 13:17

I trust her to pay her own excess. If not I know my DS would pay it. They are an honest pair.

she couldn’t lie about who is driving as if I am driving and have an accident the black box would be recording. She wouldn’t do that anyway.

It should be. My teen has a black box, he and all named drivers have to have their own app donwloaded with their own activation code so they know who is driving it and when.

This would be far more sensible. Alas it doesn’t seem to be the case with my insurance company.
