Specifically, one related to drip feeds.

Few things infuriate me more than drip feed posts. You give an opinion based on the information in the original post, then the op provides more (or sometimes different) info in the next several posts. Which then makes your original comment completely different from the opinion you would actually have, had you had all the facts to start with.

No. Because sometimes people are using this forum to process. They’ll start off with a post posted with hurt or anger or just emotion. It can take time to say what’s actually happening. Plus, none of us are forced to respond.

echt · 08/12/2024 21:20

First post nailed it.

Though I'd like capital punishment back for posters who quote the whole of a lengthy OP just to say they agree with it.

sprigatito · 08/12/2024 21:20

I don't understand all the conniptions about drip feeding. Why is it such an outrage?! Not everyone has tip-top essay writing skills, people often post when they are upset and not thinking straight - often that's why people are posting, to help them work through something that's overwhelming. Sometimes things become relevant in response to something another poster has said. The pouncing on people and "drip drip" gotcha comments make me cringe.

Ye it’s annoying but not more annoying than people who post a reply without actually reading all the op’s posts first.

I appreciate that people who post the earliest replies get caught out by what you have mentioned but the majority of posts come much later than that and wouldn’t reply with whatever they decide on if they had bothered to take the few minutes it takes to click see all on the op’s first post and read them first.

I’m talking more specifically about ones like
“AIBU to be upset that my brother didn’t invite me to his wedding”

Then in subsequent posts (after everyone has displayed absolute outrage at the brother) you find that the op once tried to murder the bride to be, and has waged a harassment vendetta against her ever since

Extreme example, but you get my point

Drip Feeds … when the thread isn’t going to way the OP wants, so they just make something up

username299 · 08/12/2024 21:30

I hate drip feeds as well. The amount of times I've responded to a post, sometimes giving phone numbers or links to organisations and they say, "Oh I've done all that already" or add more information making it irrelevant.

The worst drip feed was someone who asked about assisted accomodation for her grandmother. So I gave some options.

Then said, they're no good because she lives with a child. So I gave other options. Then she said that's no good because the child isn't British 🙄

Very fair.

Itsacoldcoldwinter · 08/12/2024 21:30

I agree with @MiriamCavendale and @sprigatito
When people are upset, when their problem is complicated and extensive and when OP's possibly don't have great writing skills then it's unreasonable to criticise them for drip feeding.
It's more annoying that some posters don't bother reading the extra information that the OP provides in their subsequent posts.

Ratrags · 08/12/2024 21:34

A good point, and worthy of further consideration

Prisonpillow · 08/12/2024 21:35

Hmmm I prefer a drip feed to reams of original post though.

Nailed it

Fartooold · 08/12/2024 22:02

Don't have a problem with drip feeding if it's obvious that they are oblivious to what's important and what's not.
Can see that sometimes It's obvious in your own head and never occurs to you that it needs to be stated.
I DO have issues with a drip feed that changes the whole story. Several times usually!

This is exactly it 🤣 I’ve come across two today alone.
Sometime the story changes so drastically that it ends up being completely different to the original post.

A specific 'report post' option for 'drip feeds' would be a bit bizarre since, afaik, they're not against talk guidelines.

Did you mean you want MNHQ to delete threads if an OP accidentally omits some salient details?

As a pp pointed out, it’s also irksome when a commenter doesn’t read updates before posting 🤣 your question is answered in a post up thread

I'd like a report option to report anyone who says "First post nailed it".

NewName24 · 08/12/2024 23:12

I don't think there's an issue when the replies are above the drip feed, as it will be obvious you've replied to the information in the opening post.

But I do agree the posters who start making things up because the majority of posters have said they ABU are really annoying.

Totally agree with @echt 's post "Though I'd like capital punishment back for posters who quote the whole of a lengthy OP just to say they agree with it.". That is perfectly reasonable.
