Hobgoblin music probably a good place to start- shops in London and other towns but can also buy online. They specialise in folkie stuff and should have a good range of price points (I assume you will want to start with a relatively inexpensive one!)

Second Hobgoblin!

SelfCareBear · 08/12/2024 19:38

Came to suggest Hobgoblin but I've been beaten to it!

Mipil · 08/12/2024 19:39

Online. Any of the major music retailers eg Thomann, Gear4Music, PMT. There are specialist accordion shops too eg The Accordian Shop. Just Google. You can often pick them up cheaply secondhand too.

I would suggest you get advice from his teacher or shop (if he doesn’t have one).

I forgot Hobgoblin!

squirrelnutcartel · 08/12/2024 19:42

We got ds' from Hobgoblin and it's been fine.

FestiveNearly · 08/12/2024 20:12

Thank you all so much.
I’ve just had a quick google and there’s a Hobgoblin in my closest city centre so I’ll pop in
at lunch time.

I was beginning to get a bit stressed and relieved now.

I searched for second hand ones but struggled to find any.

If you're anywhere near Huddersfield, check out Eagle Music.

Fb marketplace

TBH I would have thought it better for your DS to try instruments himself before buying. Musical instruments are very personal about what works best for you. I’m guessing he probably already plays piano or keyboards even if he is a complete beginner with the accordion?

Flying Tiger has toy accordions 😂 Maybe you could buy one and take him shopping for the real thing after Christmas so he can try them in person?

BTW, if he is interested in folk music, he might be interested in the National Youth Folk Music Ensemble:

EBay.

DH often "surprises" me with impulse musical eBay purchases after a drink or two.

timetoreset · 08/12/2024 22:14

As a musician, I personally would not buy a musical instrument off EBay - unless you're absolutely certain the seller has guaranteed it's in full working order. Risky.
Musical instruments can be really costly to service and repair (depends what it is of course).

DH plays the accordion. There is a wonderful specialist accordion shop in Sunningdale, if you can't get there in person, give them a ring and they'll talk you through the options and post to you. They're super helpful!

(And they have options for under £200 so don't get freaked out by the top end prices. Accordions can get expensive at the high end but there is a huge range for learners!)

Typerighter · 08/12/2024 22:21

Not hobgoblin! Awful quality with a high mark up.

Comefromaway · 08/12/2024 22:25

Ds was testing one out at a music shop in York yesterday.

Fushia123 · 08/12/2024 22:32

I bought mine a few years ago from Gear4Music.
I did some research before deciding - I was a beginner with some previous piano experience.
The left hand plays the bass notes and chords. One with 48 keys was recommended for me - they go up to the 70’s and 90’s so 48 was enough for my fingers and brain to cope with!
I would recommend some lessons with a teacher to begin with. They will help with posture, how to hold it and also offer a lovely accompaniment when your son is playing simple notes!

FestiveNearly · 21/12/2024 22:21

Update: I bought one from hobgoblin. They were very helpful with advice, too. It’s arrived and I can’t wait to give it to DC on Christmas morning. Thank you :)
