To be annoyed and feel misled about this import fee (Amazon)

My son bought something off Amazon thinking it was £210 as it says this is the amount and includes the import fee.

However on checkout it seems to have actually charged an import fee deposit of £114 bringing the total to £291.

I don't understand why when it said the import fee was included in the £210?

That happens all the time. Are you in the UK and importing from elsewhere? I'm in Ireland and the price at checkout is often different to the price on the page for products coming from the UK. It's not usually as big a difference as that though.

The import fees deposit is roughly what they reckon import fees will be. There is often a refund if they have overestimated but it's never a terribly large refund.

It's frustrating though.

Did he not check the final amount before paying? Or did it only change after he’d paid? Can he cancel?

JetskiSkyJumper · 07/12/2024 22:36

Yes in the uk. It's already been dispatched so too late to cancel.

He ordered quite a bit of stuff so I paid on my credit card for extra protection. He didn't know he would be charged more than the £210 and I didn't pay much attention to the final checkout fees as there were several items ordered together and I didn't realise it was an import and just assumed it was from the uk. Lesson learnt for us both here!

I just think it's rather misleading.

I don't think it was misleading, I just think neither of you were paying attention. Lesson learnt for next time.

LittleGreenDragons · 07/12/2024 22:40

You have the screenshot with both prices listed so I would contact Amazon's customer services to ask why it's happened. They might refund the difference, they might not, it might be a totally normal thing to happen but if you find out the why it will be easier for you to avoid in future.

If you do contact them it would be lovely if you could update the thread (as I don't understand it either).

It is quite misleading. I'm assuming it's the same as when they are shipping to Ireland from the UK. You see the price on the product page, add it to basket and then sometimes the price in the basket is higher. I'm used to it but the price shouldn't change when added to basket.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 07/12/2024 22:43

Phone Amazon customer service. I’ve never had a problem getting a ( justified) refund.
I think you can refuse the item at delivery but check with Amazon.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/12/2024 22:43

Is it because it's over £135, I would be careful buying anything over that price not from UK

LIZS · 07/12/2024 22:44

But shipping, gift wrap etc is always added afterwards. That total will have appeared on the checkout page as shown on the screenshot.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/12/2024 22:47

It is in the total though so it is included, it's not something that you have to unexpectedly pay at the doorstep

BoundaryLine · 07/12/2024 22:50

It does say it's all included. That would make me think it's the final price otherwise surely it would say not including import fees?

MartinCrieffsLemon · 07/12/2024 22:52

Did you click the hyperlink for Import Fee Deposit to see what it says?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/12/2024 22:55

I don’t think you can blame Amazon for this. They could have left off that estimate and then surprise you would have owed money. Talk to your government if you’re going to complain

you are not wrong and I'd return the item

I have just "fake ordered" this item and it's showing as £194.03 inc import

I see from your screenshot that your order is shipping from Amazon Export Sales LLC.

Amazon customer service is usually excellent, I'm sure you can resolve.

Good luck!
