I want to move house. In an ideal world I’d move somewhere that suits me for the next five years and move again in five years or so but that will cost tens of thousands. Rather than looking for a house that suits me now, I need to look for a house that will suit me for much longer or it will cost me thousands and thousands. It’s crazy in a country with a housing crises to have a tax that discourages people from moving and selling.
We should scrap stamp duty. We should have a land value tax that goes up if you better a bigger more expensive house and goes down if you downsize.
I just can’t think of a way that it could be introduced without the party that introduces it being voted out for raising people’s taxes. :(
