To prefer gaudiness to inflatable decorations

Right, I love Christmas decorations. Gaudy, tasteful, naff, exquisite, brash, twinkly, mismatched, handmade. All or a combo. Brilliant. Really brighten up this cold, dark stretch and are very meaningful in many ways to different people.

What I don't love personally are these relatively new inflatable ones for outside. They just don't bring me any joy and look like they take up maximum space for minimum effort, care, selection and pizzazz.

I have epilepsy so can see the merits of decs that aren't flashing on and off in different colours.

Does anyone love them and have a different opinion to share? Not being rude about anyone's choices, just interested to discuss as they're a newish addition and seem popular!

YABU- pro- inflatable snowmen
YANBU- trad sparkle all the way

It’s not an either/or situation between inflatables and ‘sparkle’ , surely? We just have plain white lights on the tree in the front garden and a hollyberry door wreath, and most of the indoor decorations not actually on the tree are glass or paper, as I’m quite sparkle-averse…?

Not my thing either but my small son lives to see them so I can definitely see why people go in for them for the kids.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 07/12/2024 09:02

Well obviously lots of people do love them, otherwise they wouldn't be a thing.

I wouldn't have them myself but I can sometimes appreciate that they do look quite cute and jolly.

Catlord · 07/12/2024 10:56

Well I was wondering whether people really liked them for how they look or the relative convenience

Sweet that they're a hit with the kids!

Not my personal taste but my children absolutely love spotting them on their walk to school.

Devilsmommy · 07/12/2024 11:04

There's a huge inflatable t-rex on my road. Can't say I'm a fan but I'm sure the kids love it🫣

Octavia64 · 07/12/2024 11:05

I love them.

First saw them in the Caribbean.

Really match the spirit of Christmas - loud and in your face.

Cattery · 07/12/2024 11:05

Not sure the inflatables are faring well in this weather ⛄️

Land fill in waiting

YANBU. They are neither tasteful nor gaudy, they are just naff in a kind of boring way imo. Sparkly lights I love, whether tasteful or OTT. Big plasticky figures, not so much.

TheBeesKnee · 07/12/2024 11:10

Yeah I hate them because I associate then with commercial property advertising and decorating.

I've spotted at least 3 locally.

Twinkly lights all the way pls. However I'm not keen on the cool light look, warm looks nicer imo.

Catlord · 07/12/2024 12:17

This is what they remind me of, the inflatable figures outside car dealerships, I suppose eye catching because of size but not really very festive

Personally I think they are super tacky (don't see them outside stately homes do we!) and look really cheap despite costing a fortune.
If people like them then fair enough, it's their money they are wasting 😉
I hate to be the one to say it so I am wearing my tin hat but it does seem to correlate with class, ie the middle class upwards tend to go with tasteful decor that accentuates their home's best features and the working class down tend to go with brash decor of any description, usually trying to out do next door - all bought on credit from Very or Studio or possibly with their love to shop vouchers.
Before everyone piles on me I am very much working class (I just have excellent taste in Christmas decs😆)
