No snowboarding on school ski trip

This is so frivolous I know!

My DD is Y8 she has two very close friends and they are all going on the school ski trip in January. Today one of the friends dad has complained in our group chat non stop about how they aren’t allowing his daughter to do any Snowboarding, he claims he’s offered to send her with equipment etc.
Now when it comes to it, it’s because his daughter is better at snowboarding, she’s been going on a trip with her dad every half term since she was a child and always doing private snowboarding lessons. He keeps making it clear she can ski but isn’t as advanced.
He’s now asked a slightly larger group chat of parents 7 kids worth, to join him in complaining to the school as it’s unfair she won’t get to snowboard.
One of the parents has pointed out that it will be because for lessons they will split into ability groups and even if they made a snowboard group she’d probably be too advanced as it would be a small minority who would pick it.
Others have agreed it’s very unfair and will be joining him in complaining.

AIBU to think he’s being very precious and his DD can ski with everyone else for 5 days? Is this normal in your kids school or do they let them ski or snowboard.

He's just showing off about his daughter's accomplishments.

DanielaDressen · 28/11/2024 18:37

He's a twat. Don't book on a ski trip if you don't want to ski. Simple.

I feel sorry for teachers, it's a lot of work and stress organising such a trip and then they have to put up with this sort of shit.

nickatiara · 28/11/2024 18:38

Yanba - she should definitely just ski

Namenamchange · 28/11/2024 18:38

I guess it depends what they were told at booking and if that has changed.

SOSausage · 28/11/2024 18:38

Clue is in the name

DanielaDressen · 28/11/2024 18:39

I they had 2 or 3 groups of ski class for different levels and then a couple of snowboard classes as well they'd need 2x more instructors for the 5 days. They can't join existing groups lessons I guess because of safeguarding. The cost of another 2 instructors would push the price of the trip up for everyone (I'd point that out on the chat and people might rethink supporting him). Plus they'd need more teachers to maintain ratios.

EmotionalSupportPotato · 28/11/2024 18:40

If he doesn't want his daughter to go on a ski trip he shouldn't have signed her up for a ski trip. Is snowboarding skiing? No it is not.

Ivyn · 28/11/2024 18:41

God what a knob.

It will give everyone in the staffroom a laugh though. Or a massive eye roll.

Please put this on the group chat 😁

His poor child.

Littletreefrog · 28/11/2024 18:42

He's showing off and/or his daughter wants to show off on the trip. If she is a good snowboarder and goes regularly she doesn't need to snowboard on the ski trip.

This.

How embarrassing for his daughter.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 28/11/2024 18:43

It sounds like only skiing is on offer so he’s going to have to make do with that.

At my DC’s school the ski trips offered either skiing or snowboarding, never a mix. The snowboarding option was always a bit more expensive.

I fear logic like this fails him!
His ex wife has said to us that it’s because he can’t stand that their DD will probably fall into the intermediate groups for skiing.
This girl usually wins everything because her dad is a very pushy parent.

A ski trip at school is often some children's only opportunity to try skiing and that type of trip abroad.

It's not a holiday where his precious darling can hit the slopes with her mates to sharpen her boarding skills.
He sounds ridiculous.

whiteboardking · 28/11/2024 18:44

Painful. Sounds incredibly entitled. Just don't go on trip if it's not what he wants.

Id imagine it’s a combination, DD claims her friend always has to be the best and hates when she isn’t.

Did the school make it clear that they were only offering skiing?

My son's school calls it a ski trip- but can do ski and snowboard.

My daughter's school calls it a ski trip and only offers skiing.

I think if you kid can already ski / snowboard it's worth checking to see if the trip would be suitable.

SuzieNine · 28/11/2024 18:45

School ski trips aren’t actually very interesting for kids who can already ski (or indeed snowboard) to a reasonable standard. Maybe in sixth form it’s better but in lower years it’s a waste of time.

it’s very much about group lessons followed by, if you are lucky, an hour or so of
guided skiing in the afternoon before all being shooed back to the accommodation for ‘activities’. An experienced snowboarder, even if they could accommodate her, would be bored senseless.

FrenchandSaunders · 28/11/2024 18:45

Prick. Ignore

ParkBench5 · 28/11/2024 18:45

I don’t see why both skiing and snowboarding couldn’t take place tbh.

Gentillie · 28/11/2024 18:46

Oh Gosh I just checked the chat and the last message from him was

“I might just pull her from the trip and take her snowboarding that week instead, if they try to fine me they can go f*ck themselves”

The entitlement!

Presumably because they have only arranged ski instructors.

Extra cost for lessons
Extra cost for equipment hire
Staff ratios
