DH and his jeans..

NavyOrca · 26/11/2024 03:53

I’ve been having an ongoing issue with DH for many years regarding how often he does - or more accurately, doesn’t - change his jeans.

The rest of his personal hygiene is absolutely fine.. showers thoroughly once a day, changes top / underwear / socks daily, shaves, brushes teeth twice a day, uses deodorant.

But his jeans. Oh god. He changes them usually once a week / 10 days. He’ll wear the same pair for work (desk job from home), walking dog (road walks, not muddy ones), and going to shops etc.

I think this is vile. I half-joked about this with my MIL one time, and her response to me was “well, he’s just like his dad”. This terrifies me as my FIL’s personal hygiene is atrocious and I couldn’t bear being with somebody like this. DH swears he will never get as bad as this.

He has plenty of pairs, and can offer no explanation as to why he doesn’t change them more frequently.

We argued about this issue last night, which makes me sad, as we rarely argue. He’s a wonderful husband and my best friend.. but he doesn’t see the issue with changing his jeans as infrequently as this!

Which one of us is BU here?!

I think this is fine. Jeans aren’t supposed to be washed that often, it ruins the shape of them. They’re not like other clothes, think about how jeans even came about as garments.

Does he smell or do they look dirty? If not he is fine. Jeans aren't supposed to be washed constantly.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/11/2024 04:07

YABU. Jeans aren't meant to be washed all the time. How often do you want him to change them?

Hols23 · 26/11/2024 04:39

I think that's fine. According to the Levi's website you should wash them every 10 wears at most:

How Often You Should Wash Denim

Washing denim too frequently can cause them to lose their shape and fit. Wash them once every 10 wears at most to keep them fitting correctly and minimize sagging. Use a damp cloth or old toothbrush with mild soap to remove small stains between washes instead of a full cycle

I'm quite stringent on hygiene but I can't find much to get worked up about wearing jeans for a week or ten days. They don't show the dirt, they don't smell and they don't absorb much "stuff". Shirts? Two days max. Cotton trousers? A week max. Jeans...yeh ten days is just about ok.

MissedItByThisMuch · 26/11/2024 04:43

Assuming they don’t look dirty or smell and he’s wearing underwear I don’t see what the issue is. Newly washed jeans feel stiff and horrible. Once a week or so seems fine to me.

LimeYellow · 26/11/2024 05:23

I wash my jeans once a week. It's fine.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/11/2024 05:30

Some people believe you should never wash jeans. www.independent.co.uk/life-style/fashion/levis-ceo-explains-why-you-should-never-wash-your-jeans-a6881031.html

Raw denim and all that fancy stuff.

BoxOfCats · 26/11/2024 06:15

Sounds fine to me. How often do you wash yours?

MaggieBsBoat · 26/11/2024 06:18

You OP are obviously BU.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/11/2024 06:18

You’ve had a row about this?

firstly, what he’s doing is absolutely fine. Secondly, are you monitoring / checking this? Weird.

Keepmedicationoutofthereachofchildren · 26/11/2024 06:22

If he showers everyday with clean underwear then all sounds fine to me.

K0OLA1D · 26/11/2024 06:22

Sorry you are being unreasonable.

eurochick · 26/11/2024 06:24

That sounds fine to me. I probably wear mine at least seven times between washes, albeit not on consecutive days.

TheScoop · 26/11/2024 06:30

YABU. All this unnecessary washing. No wonder the planet is fucked.

moose62 · 26/11/2024 06:33

If he smells, just put the jeans in the machine at night so he has to wear another pair. If they don't smell, leave him to it. I don't wash my family's jeans every day...more like every 4 or 5.

ForGreyKoala · 26/11/2024 06:40

YABU. Jeans are not supposed to be washed often. We have messages on TV here about washing clothes less, and from memory jeans are recommended to be washed after around 10 wears.

InTheRainOnATrain · 26/11/2024 06:46

Sorry but he’s right and is following the suggested care instructions for denim! It’d only be gross if they’re visibly stained and/or he goes commando!

DustyLee123 · 26/11/2024 06:47

Why don’t you just put them in the wash and put another pair out if it bothers you that much.

greengreyblue · 26/11/2024 06:51

We do the same op .Jeans aren’t supposed to be washed too often .If you’re cleaned daily then your jeans should be fairly clean. Do you think he should wash every item of clothing after wearing? Only underwear and socks need that.
YABU

DustyLee123 · 26/11/2024 06:47

Why don’t you just put them in the wash and put another pair out if it bothers you that much.

I'm assuming with the arguing that he doesn't want her to.

My dp doesn't want me to wash his jeans. I ask, he says no, no argument.

greengreyblue · 26/11/2024 06:54

Just to add that I have no idea how many days DH wears his jeans and I do the washing. He puts them in the washing basket when he wants them washed.

BetteDavisChin · 26/11/2024 07:03

I'd be glad if I were you. Jeans are a bulky item in the washing load and take longer to dry than other items, whether in the tumble dryer or on the washing line.

It's ecologically more sound to wear them more times before laundering. Ten times is fine.

pizzaHeart · 26/11/2024 07:07

I’m a bit confused. Do you want him to wear something different for inside and outside or just wash jeans more often ? Because in my view they are two different issues. A week doesn’t sound too long to wear the same jeans but wearing the same clothes inside and outside is gross imo (putting my tin hat on but still sticking to this view)
