Is sister up to something dodgy?

vfdrh53 · 23/11/2024 16:59

To cut a long story short my sister who lives abroad in Europe has a phone she uses in the country she lives in and a British phone she uses to call people in the UK. Sister needs to buy a new British phone and has asked to use our address for purchasing the new phone and contract and for us to send the phone over to her country by post.

DH has outright refused and said she is up to something fishy and does not want to get involved. Sister is elderly and refuses to get a smart phone and use WhatsApp.

How can she get a UK contract if she lives abroad?

Can she just buy a phone anywhere and put her SIM card in it?

Smittenkitchen · 23/11/2024 17:02

Doesn't sound remotely fishy. Sometimes when you live abroad you have to do things like that. It's something she needs which requires a UK address. It would help her out and help her to keep in touch with people in the UK. If you have no reason to think she's running some kind of crime ring then I don't know why you would be so suspicious.

DH has a UK phone and one for the country he lives in 6 months of the year.
Nothing dodgy at all, you get unlimited for UK on your UK and unlimited on your other in that country, DH's other phone also has free data etc for when we travel.
It saves £££££

Wow, you must be a real treat at partys. Your sister is either in the mafia, or she want to break the somewhat arbitrary rules about who can have a UK phone contract. I'm betting on the contract.
I bet you've never ever parked on a double yellow line either

RadioBamboo · 23/11/2024 18:35

Possibly dealing drugs? Don't get involved.

Starlight7080 · 23/11/2024 18:36

What could she possibly be up to. Does he think she is using your details. Because that would be very obvious as soon as it arrives.
She obviously just needs to use a uk address. So she can get the cheapest deal when it comes to calls and such.
Don't be mean . Just help out your sister

Dealers no longer regard WhatsApp as secure - she'll be using Telegram or similar.

I actually wouldn’t be ok with this. A contract is a credit agreement. I wouldn’t want my address on someone else’s credit agreement.

romdowa · 23/11/2024 18:41

Can't she just buy an unlocked phone in her country and you send her a payg sim? I wouldn't Want her contract connected to my house either

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 23/11/2024 18:56

That's the easiest way to get and use a UK phone. Unless you have reason to think your sister is dodgy, go ahead and help her out.

Why be so unpleasant to the OP? It’s her DH who’s objecting and she’s come on here to ask advice.

KenAdams · 23/11/2024 19:08

Eh that's not an unusual thing for someone to do. Chill out a bit.

stargazerlil · 23/11/2024 21:29

She won’t be able to get a new phone for here without an address.

AppleDumplings · 23/11/2024 21:59

We've had to do this with phones when living abroad. It's a pain in the bum sometimes but definitely nothing fishy!

Of course! Grin

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/11/2024 22:44

She's probably not up to anything dodgy, although whether you want her name and credit score associated with your address is a different question.

A lot of companies just insist on a UK postcode and won't proceed without one. I've let family and friends use mine many times and they have never been up to anything, just trying to get past "computer says no".

thaisweetchill · 23/11/2024 22:46

Not dodgy at all, my father had two phones when living in Spain, he still worked part time in the UK so needed it but he still had his home in the UK so was able to be registered. I think your DH is being ridiculous.

FarmGirl78 · 23/11/2024 23:35

To those posters saying "You wouldn't want her credit score associated with your address", credit scores are linked to people, not addresses.
