Pierced ears still bleeding slightly months after being pierced

I got my daughters ears pierced over the summer, and was very careful to follow all aftercare instructions, I continue to clean them with warm water and piercing aftercare spray twice daily yet months later and there is STILL tiny amounts of blood when she removes her earrings at night. She says they’re not sore etc. She has sterling silver earrings, thought these wouldn’t cause irritation but why are they still bleeding months after being pierced? She had them done at a professional piercers within a tattoo shop, not at Claire’s Accessories etc.
is this normal?

No she says they’re not hurting other than when we take them in and out…..I feel like we’ve got into a bit of a vicious cycle because if they’re sore and bleeding I have to take them out to clean any blood etc off, but according to the messages here it’s likely to be the taking them out that’s causing irritation?!

If they're sore just leave them alone, the skin needs to heal without you twisting or fiddling with them - that's probably what's causing the bleeding.

You don't need to remove them at night OR to clean them.

Atishooo · 25/11/2024 20:21

Stop taking them out!

You don’t need to take them out to clean them, just use a cotton bud and clean round them. Taking them out constantly is causing the problem. No wonder they’re so sore.

My nose and cartilage piercings I didn’t take out for a year.

Hi, thanks for your replies, no her earlobes aren’t thick, both earlobes have a little bump around the piercing now that wasn’t there before and keep bleeding small amounts - I’ve taken them out and am going to go back to the piercers for advice around how they’re looking/putting a flatback titanium pair in?

Be careful..when I was 8 I had my ears pierced and they developed a bump around the piercing also and one day one of them got badly infected and the whole lobe swelled up and went rock hard and painful. My mum took the earring out and blood poured out onto my coat so that was the end of my piercings (until I was 13, they went bad too, had them done the last time age 19 they are still OK 23 years on)

I got a piercing over the summer and it still weeps a bit. They told me at the time that it takes a year for the body to give up trying to heal what it perceives as a wound so just roll with it for a few more months. Keep up the saline solution and tell her leave them in at night, maybe change the back as pp say.

Ok I’m going to put them back in tomorrow morning and in the meantime make an appointment with the piercer to have her look at them/get some titanium earrings put in - and leave them in! Thanks xx

Honestly, it doesn't sound like your DD is reacting to the metal particularly. The only problem is that you've ripped the wound open over and over. The important thing now is just to keep the earrings in and touch them as little as possible. A gentle once a day clean is fine, no more, and I wouldn't even normally do that at this stage if it weren't for the fact that it's still open.

Surely the piercer told you the earrings should stay in. They stay in even in the case of infection, because if you take them out, they will heal closed with the infection inside and become an abscess
