Teachers- Splitting mat/shared parental leave around holidays

Is it cheeky to end my mat leave, 'go back to work' for half term, then take shared parental leave (as you can take it in blocks)? Have people ever done this?

Do people in other jobs get to carry forward annual leave after being on mat leave? Surely it's the same at that, due to only being paid term time.

Wouldn't you have to do work over the half term?

Hmmm yeah do it. Loads of staff try to work mat leave around summer holidays.

Done it twice! Use the website

And don’t feel bad - like you say it’s the same as using annual leave at the end of maternity to either get paid or take longer.

Friend’s DD says she is doing this; despite being a teacher I had never known anyone who split leave In this way . Is it common??

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 21/11/2024 19:26

It's definitely becoming a done thing. Two on mat leave at one of the schools I work at have split the parental leave with partners so they get paid over holidays.

MrBirling · 21/11/2024 19:37

Absolutely do this. It's fine and to be expected. Maternity pay isn't great so doing this really helps.

Cartref26 · 21/11/2024 19:47

@Pottedpalm its become known at my school now so is being done more regularly, the website states that they started 6 years ago when there wasn’t much information, so I bet it’s only become more known about recently

Not if it's your only week 'at work'!
