To support UK Farmers

And due to KS's inability to face them in Wales today they are now thinking of going on strike. Because the govt are being too stubborn to reconsider how they apply IHT on working family farms. By all means close the loophole that allows the 'landed gentry' to take advantage of the agricultural exception but not with so blunt an instrument.

I was hoping to add a post to an existing thread but there isn't one despite it being headline news today.

The farmers who this will affect ARE the landed gentry.

Kwiaenrker · 16/11/2024 17:34

You are spot on. Its appalling.

You have no idea. Why do you think this?

PrincessAnne4Eva · 16/11/2024 17:36

YANBU OP, it's disgraceful how farmers are treated.

Why would there already be a thread? It's a bit of a niche subject, isn't it? Inheritance Tax is irrelevant to most of us, then narrow it down further to farmers ... it's hardly going to send us running to MN to create a thread.

Farms worth less than £2.8m will be pretty much unaffected.

The landed gentry will be utterly unaffected

Chancers like Clarkson WILL be affected
good

Dan Neidle is correct on the issue

Utter bullshit.

Viviennemary · 16/11/2024 17:38

They should pay inheritance tax like everybody else.

PrincessAnne4Eva · 16/11/2024 17:39

I think some people in government don't necessarily understand land prices or how all those farmers who are renting will also be fucked if their landowners can't pass down their farms straight to their successors and instead have to break the land up and sell to developers to raise the IHT too. Or maybe they do understand it. 🧐

It won't be a niche subject if they 'go French'

Food as a niche subject ffs

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 16/11/2024 17:40

I always buy fresh fruit and veg — any that can be grown in our climate — from British farmers. Not bananas or oranges, obviously. But we still eat healthily all year round.

rayofsunshine86 · 16/11/2024 17:41

The last thread about farmers and IHT maxed out at 1,000 comments.

Farming and its viability is relevant to every single person.
Farmers go bankrupt, no-one wants yo farm, no food security.
I can't understand why people don't get it. I have no farming background whatsoever but it just looks as plain as day to me that this is not thought through. The supermarkets have been squeezing farmers for years. Now this. We have to support our farmers to make a living.
Or bloody starve.

Papyrophile · 16/11/2024 17:43

I am in two minds here. I think there is a case to be made for altering the IHT on farmland, because there are individuals who do abuse the exemption to dodge IHT.

But there are equally (probably more) farming families with 300-500 acres who need that many acres to have viable agricultural holdings. Land values vary so much across the country... from a few thousand an acre for upland farms to £30k per acre in the Cotswolds ... that I suspect the rules will need some refining and indexation if the policy is to work as the Chancellor intends.

I know MNers can make a chicken last a long time but here we have someone who apparently doesn't eat food... 🤦‍♀️

Actually I think this is what Labour are banking on

porridgecake · 16/11/2024 17:46

When Putin is taking over Europe and all we can import is chlorinated chicken from USA, I expect the government will regret not having supported the farmers and invested heavily in local food production. If ever there was a time when we needed to be working towards self sufficiency it is now. If farmers have to sell off land bit by bit to pay IHT, food production will decrease.

It's to facilitate net zero I guess, by way of land grabbing.
We would do better with aiming for food security
