My friend has been having a long distance relationship with a man and they talk every day, it’s adorable. She said they’re meeting up soon and he says he can’t wait to hold her tight and sniff her neck! She thought it was cute but I’d not heard a man say that before! He doesn’t know what her perfume is so presumably it’s her natural smell he craves but I just wondered is neck sniffing a thing?! I understand why he’d imagine kissing her neck but sniffing it?!! What does it mean?!

A person's smell near their neck is like their true smell.
My husband goes to sea for months at a time, yes we kiss when we see each other, but there is also a whole lots of sniffing, haha!

It's a very basic animal (including human) instinct.

It's a comfort/intimacy thing.

My husband does the same. He says it just smells like getting a proper hit of "me".

Also nice to transition from that to neck kisses which are lovely lol.

Yes, exactly! I sniff my mum’s neck when I give her cuddle, it’s her true ‘mum’ smell, and it’s beautiful.

It’s not at all an odd thing to say (DH’s neck is delicious), but have these two people actually met in person?

I get it, he wants to fully know her. He probably only sees a screen version of her. He wants to use all his senses to smell and touch too. I smell my kids heads it's much the same thing.

If they’ve not met in person it’s also not a long distance relationship, it’s just talking to someone unless they’ve met imo.

Yes, exactly to both points. In fact, it’s one of the reasons that talking about a ‘LDR’ between two people who’ve never met (if this is in fact the case) is such nonsense. Smell is incredibly important in attraction. You can meet someone who you’ve liked on the phone and who are objectively good-looking, but they’ll smell ‘wrong’. DH immediately smelt ‘like home’ to me.

They met ages ok and have been messaging online since. He seems lovely, makes her laugh, has really helped her confidence and given her a bit of light in her life, which is lovely to see. They have so many in jokes and short hand phrases that only they understand. She says they talk about holding each other etc.
