To think that a mattress maketh the bed (comfy)

I need to buy new beds. Cannot find frames I like except for the cheapest plainest IKEA ones.

Do you think that if I buy the best quality mattress and topper I can for these simple frames, then the whole bed will be comfortable and not feel cheap.

(I am open to comfortable, plain bed suggestions too)

I bought the Premier Inn mattresses, I think they are called Hypnos, and I bought an additional 7.5cm topper. I love my bed.

Absolutely. We recently bought a new mattress for our 20 year old bed frame, spent more on the mattress because we weren't also buying the frame.

Btw bfore anyone says it's rank having a 20 year old mattress, I agree but this is our third mattress for the frame.

Some time ago we bought new slats for our bed frame and it massively increased the comfort with the same mattress. The previous slats had weakened over time and weren't supporting the mattress.

So I'd look carefully at the strength of the slats in the frame. You can buy slats separately, and, although it sounds ridiculous, you might find the best approach is to replace the slats on your new cheap bed frame with sturdier ones.

Absolutely! Many people find that investing in a high-quality mattress and topper makes a big difference in comfort, even with a simpler bed frame. A solid mattress and a good topper can offer great support and coziness, while the frame mostly provides structure.

IKEA frames, even the basic ones, are typically sturdy enough to support a good mattress setup, so you’ll likely still have a comfortable and restful bed without it feeling cheap. Plus, simpler frames can be easily dressed up with bedding and pillows to fit your style!

I think so
Mine is a fairly plain metal bed I've had for 20 years and it's comfortable and sturdy

Ikea mattresses often do well on Which tests. Don't dismiss them so readily.

Totally agree about the comfort of a mattress, OP.

But 30-odd years ago we bought a cheap mattress in a rush when we got our first flat in a bargain-basement type shop in the local town. It was incredibly comfortable, and I'm afraid we kept it far longer than we should have.

We then decided to shell out for a much more up-market one about 10 years ago. It's nowhere near as comfortable. We like a firm mattress, but softened with a topper. We can't justify changing it again - and also, having made a mistake once, we're apprehensive about repeating it! There was nothing wrong with the old one, either ...we just felt we should change it for hygiene reasons!

More money doesn't always buy better.
