Living allowance text scam - watch out

Cardboardeaux · 05/11/2024 14:07

I know IANBU but posting for traffic.

I've received a number of texts recently claiming to be from a "liaison officer" and saying it is my "last chance" to claim a living allowance. The texts have, variously, claimed to be from the UK government or the home office. There is a link in the text that they want you to click on. The link presumably takes you to a site that will steal data/instal malware or similar

To me the text was an obvious scam, but just thought I would share this in case it helps anyone else who might be more vulnerable.

How strange, I've just had that!

I've had it 3 times before. First time I've seen the same scam multiple times which was what prompted me to post. Awful that people might get a second text and think "oh no, what if it's genuine, better click on the link and see".

I got one for about winter heating allowance - dodgy link which asked me to give my bank details etc - I knew immediately but some poor sod (who probably really needs this subsidy!!) may not realise in time. I reported it.

I shared this to local community pages on fb today, sick disgusting people.

Another one talked about a "living allowance" so I guess trying to target people with disabilities? 😥
