Wooden headboard how to make more comfortable

Hello

so rather spend money on whole new bed like DH wants, I think we can replace mattress on our solid wooden bed frame. I know the colour is old fashioned but it is a solid bed, and I don’t think a financial priority

has anyone padded out a headboard? How did it go, my sewing skills are non existent

We did it with DS headboard. He wanted a denim one and we couldn't find one. We got a piece of foam cut to fit (about an inch deep), then got a large piece of denim and stretched it over and using a staple gun we around the back we attached it. No sewing required!
