To be itching all over (mirena)

Posting for traffic

had a mirena put in around 10 days ago

from the one week mark I've been itching all over my body, particularly limbs and scalp. It's unbearable.

is this likely coil related? Anyone had it and did it go away? I'm at end of my rope with my periods and desperate for this to work 😩 I'm happy to give it a few months to settle but not if this is likely to be a permanent issue or I'm perhaps allergic

any particular antihistamines that worked to relieve it?

Oh this is interesting. I’ve been convinced the kids have given me nits for the last couple of months because my scalp has been so itchy. But given there’s no evidence of nits on any of us perhaps it’s then more a coil I had fitter.

sorry that’s maybe not helpful for you

That kind of itching can be a perimenopausal symptom so it may not be that you're allergic but that your hormones are doing funny things and it may settle down. Going on HRT stopped my idiopathic hives and itching (after a few months). That said, I would see GP about it as there's no way for anyone on here to know if it's hormones or an allergy.

Fexofenedine is great for managing constant itching in my experience.

I'm on the combined pill and after my break, about one week in I get this for 1-2 days. It's oestrogen related. Drives me insane but I take the pill for various reasons and the positives outweigh that negative.

@DelilahBucket one week into my cycle would be about the same timing as this, given coil was out in just before period. Thanks. Gosh I hope it's just 1-2 days

@DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole also interesting - perhaps this reflects the fact my progesterone is now slightly higher causing the effect of lower oestrogen as in peri. I had a hormone profile down and was told I'm not peri but I know it fluctuates and not all doctors use hormones nowadays

hope it settles down! I did take a sleep ease earlier which made the itching stop but also obviously made me quite drowsy! I was desperate!

@DelilahBucket its gone today - so 2.5 days. Maybe it'll turn out that I'm like you and get it at a specific time of the month. How weird. I think I can deal with it for a few days, if as you say the other benefits come through.

actually apart from these odd weird symptoms I think I feel better on the coil than au naturale. I'm 40. I feel a bit more level somehow, whereas I was expecting to be a crazed beast. So that's good!

I agree that it’s likely to be hormone related so yes, could well be triggered by your coil. Hopefully it will settle down soon. Are you able to take antihistamines?
