I think I’ve messed up my Universal Credit- will they stop it?

Posting here because I’m really panicking. I’ve had a message from UC saying I need to update my passport photo and provide 4 months of bank statements. I’ve done both and then looked at my bank statements and they are so misleading. Basically, when I get paid, I pay all bills and then move all money into savings. I only ever have £50-£100 in my account at anytime. The rest gets put into savings and then I slowly move it into my current account over the month as I need it. A couple of years ago I really struggled financially and this trick means when I check my balance, I have no money so I don’t spend, when actually it’s in savings and then spreads for the full month. But because of this, the bank statements show that I have literally thousands of pounds coming into my accounts every month. It also shows equal for outgoings, but it’s £5k some months. I don’t have anywhere near this much money, but because I move it in and out of savings (sometimes several times a month, if I get paid work expenses or when my child’s DLA comes in). Even worse, one of the months, I cancelled a holiday, so got money back from the deposit, put it in savings, then used the money to pay off other bills. That month has £6,000 going through my account.

Im not completely broke, I work part time, I’m a carer for one of my kids (who has complex additional needs and can’t attend before/after school care, thus the part time), I receive DLA for the child as well as UC and child benefit. I don’t receive any child maintenance and I’m a single parent so paying all bills etc.

will they remove my payments for this? Do they actually look at the information in the statements, or just the income/outgoing? I’ve written a note in the journal asking but no one’s answering and I’m really worried. We rely on this money, I’m just about managing with it, but my rent and council tax are covered by my wage, everything else is paid for through UC. I’m so embarrassed that I’m so reliant on it, but we are and I can’t change that right now. What can I do?

if it's your money and you're not "not declaring" your savings then I think that sounds fine. You just need to explain it to them. Contact Citizens Advice as they may be able to help you.

Coffeein · 01/11/2024 19:28

If you never have more than £16k at any given time you're fine.

Grandmasswagbag · 01/11/2024 19:29

I didn't quite understand. How much is in your savings ? Can't you just show them statements for both accounts if you are literally just moving the money between the 2 accounts? It should be obvious for them to see.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 01/11/2024 19:29

Doubt it. My DM gets UC and we send money back and forth like the clappers because she loves spending money and UC isn't enough ~ some months she has thousands in and out. They've also checked her statements and nothing flagged, despite the fact she's spending far more than her UC.

IHateHorridHenry · 01/11/2024 19:33

@Coffeein i can’t imagine having £16,000 in any accounts! It’s literally £1,000 at the most in savings and then spending it again.

@Grandmasswagbag they didn’t ask for savings and I can’t send them now because I’ve already pressed to send. I have contacted them, but they’ve not answered and now it’s the weekend

I would think they mean for you to show them the bank statements from all your accounts. Otherwise they're not getting the information they're looking for. Send everything. Much better to do that than get overpaid/underpaid.

InglouriousBasterd · 01/11/2024 19:36

I do the same and I had a self employment interview, they just asked to see the savings account when I explained. It was no problem at all. Just send statements for both accounts and explain in your journal, they’ll match it up.

IHateHorridHenry · 05/11/2024 07:46

Just a quick update. I’ve tried to add my savings statements but it won’t let me add anymore to the questions where they’ve asked. I’ve put another question in the journal but they’ve not answered either so far. The things to do list has moved the ‘we’ll give you a call’ to the bottom of the list (under the 2021 request to update nursery costs that I can’t get rid of) so I’m not sure what’s happening. Not due a payment for a few weeks so just stewing at the moment. Work have announced redundancies are coming so panicking about all money now

They shouldn't stop your UC. They most likely will want an explanation and likely want to see your savings account statements.

It might take a while for them to get back to you. The "to-do" list is often autogenerated, then it takes a while for a human to check the information. It would need a humans confirmation for your UC to stop (or even to read the statements, the system cant do that), so that human will contact you for explanation before just deciding to stop your UC. And if they dont, they've messed up.

if you havnt heard back, it's because a human hasn't looked at it yet.

Wellingtonspie · 05/11/2024 07:55

If you are sending it between your own account or even if it was your mum tbh they will see that you sent £1,000 to account or reference (1735296) and then see that account (1735296) has been sending you money back.

So if they have a brain cell rocking around they will clearly see the £1,000 go out and come back again.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 05/11/2024 07:59

They asked me to come in and go through the statements with them in person - had to print them all. They then sent them off to an adjudicator when something wasn’t clear, who I was told May want to speak to me about certain purchases and could take months to decide . I wasn’t sure what would Happen to my UC in that time, thankfully it only took a few weeks, they never called me, and I got my payment , but it was a bit stressful!

Mumuzuzu · 05/11/2024 08:03

I do this too and have just transfered to UC
I have ADHD and need to put it 'away' otherwise I lose track and spend it.
So I send my bills, rents etc to my savings then transfer it back when DDs are due

I didn't even think it may be an issue on UC :(

Ibsflare · 05/11/2024 08:05

I get this my statement is misleading ! If I only have £50 but move it between accounts it keeps adding it up so if I move it back and forth ten times my account says £500 has gone in that day

PebbleDashAtOne · 05/11/2024 08:08

Best thing to do is give them a ring. Tell them you want to upload your savings statements and they should update your online thing (best if you’re looking at it at the same time) to provide the uploading facility.

I was having a right nightmare with UC stuff recently, and the woman I spoke to was really patient and helpful and talked me through what I needed to do. My claim wouldn’t have proceeded without this interaction! 🫤

What purchases were they "concerned" about? There's nothing in the law that says you can only spend your benefits on certain things.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 05/11/2024 08:44

They thought we might have been intentionally deprecating funds as our total went down a lot in about 2 months

IHateHorridHenry · 22/11/2024 13:31

Just a quick update to say the meeting went fine, they asked for more documents to show all bank accounts and closed the review today with no changes :) thanks for all the help!
