I was offered a job through an agency and on the day I was due to start the agency messaged to say the company will be changing the start date but no reason given as to why.
Few days later the agency have still not given a start date.
Do you think I am been messed about and should look for something else or wait as obviously I need a wage.
I turned down another job for this one and also cancelled 2 interviews that where to take place the day I was meant to start the job.
There is now another job offer but I prefer the one I'm waiting on so what I do

It is quite poor from the company, they never give proper consideration to how these decisions can effect staff. I would apply for other jobs if you wanted to, surely this delay shouldn't be longer than a few days. If it is weeks, they can hardly be surprised when people don't sit around waiting and take other job offers.

FourEyesGood · 01/11/2024 14:06

Contact the agency and tell them the situation: they need to give you confirmation of a start date or you’ll accept one of the other opportunities.

LavenderFields7 · 01/11/2024 14:08

They will keep messing you about. Cut your losses and apply for other positions.

Limerickgal · 01/11/2024 14:12

Be open with the agency, if you don't get a start date asap, I would definitely look/accept another job!! they should understand you can't wait forever as most people would need the money!

lechatnoir · 01/11/2024 14:17

If you were about to start then presumably you have contact details of someone in the organisation to report to? I'd give the agency one last call (not email as they clearly aren't responding to them) and if you can't get through go direct to the company.

I wondered about that but I didn't want to upset the agency going behind thier back

Don't be fooled. Speak to the agency, and start looking for another job immediately.

Tevion321 · 01/11/2024 14:55

And yes I was given a name of somebody to report to I would love to call and see what the company says.

Take the offer that you have. You can always leave if the other one actually materialises. doubt it though

nam3c4ang3 · 01/11/2024 15:02

I mean - my own experience of this is the hiring manager had a bereavement in the family so i started a few weeks later but i was always told and kept in the loop by the agency.

Tevion321 · 01/11/2024 15:13

Well yes I know there could be a good reason but I did speak to the agency and say that I need to start a job as I need a wage sooner rather than later.

Tell the agency you have another job offer and you need confirmation of the start date ASAP (give them a date you need to know by). They will want their fee so should act quickly.

Good idea I will relay this to them on Monday

Why Monday? Call them now!

StripeyDeckchair · 01/11/2024 16:35

If this is how they treat you before tou start it's not going to get better.

Cut your losses & find another job

This lot will be bad employers

Tevion321 · 01/11/2024 17:31

I've already been in touch twice and now it's after 5 on a Friday so may as well wait until Monday. Do you think I should go over the agencies head and call the company.

OP posts:
bows101 · 01/11/2024 19:21

I wouldn't call the company
This is why they use an agency so they don't have to deal with you directly
It's the company messing around the agency. The agency will be keen to get you into work ASAP too - it's their commission!

I'd just tell the agency you need the new start date ASAP or you will be looking to accept another opportunity. At this time of year (well any time) they know people can't afford to hang around not knowing
