To ask for the CCTV?

Halloween and we handed out candy to at least 150 children this afternoon - doorbell ringing non stop until we ran out of candy at about 7pm.
We just moved to this house and there are lots of decorated houses in the neighbourhood and cute kids trick or treating.
I put up a sign saying “sorry, ran out of candy” and turned our lights out.
Shortly after I heard a bang on our door and loud thump. Someone had torn our sign away and smashed our pumpkin. Must have thrown it really hard against the door because it made a big mess all over.
AIBU to ask our neighbours for their CCTV? We were the only house targeted as far as I can tell and I’m having unpleasant paranoid thoughts about it.

You should definitely ask for it.

SilverChampagne · 31/10/2024 19:54

Would their cctv cover your front door?

I am not sure, but it might at least show who has been in the garden / passed in front of our house during that time.
The two houses are terraced and the doors next to each other with just a short brick wall in between.

I wouldn't bother.

Some kids use the 'trick' part of trick or treating to take the pee and be nasty. Throwing stuff at the door isn't unusual. One year my mum had eggs thrown at her door and another year my sister had water sprayed on her with water guns by pranking kids who didn't receive candy.

My point is it's the nasty side of Halloween and unfortunately nothing much would come of it. Chalk it down to experience.

Try and figure out who did this and if it’s someone we know being nasty.
I guess I am weirded out by the fact that it was just our house targeted.
Also whoever did it is not a small kid. They were in and out in a zip & big enough to carry a heavy pumpkin and throw it.

I suppose I’m being unreasonable though and should just chalk it down to experience as suggested by @DysonSphere

Make WANTED posters? 🤔

That's why I hate Halloween OP. It draws out the trouble makers. We are used to that kind of shit round here in a naive part of London. The worst one was a lit firework through the letterbox.

Stichintime · 31/10/2024 20:18

So you like the treat bit, but not the trick?

I thought the trick or treat was what you dish out at the front door to those knocking.
I don’t think the trick part gives people permission for vandalism. They smashed a pumpkin on our door and made a big mess out there. That goes beyond what I think is permissible or even legal.

I doubt you'd recognise them anyway OP so little point in trying to obtain cctv. Police won't do anything about someone smashing a pumpkin. Probably just teenagers being annoying. Let it go.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 31/10/2024 22:41

If you'd run out of sweets why didn't you take your pumpkin in?

pinpoplou · 31/10/2024 22:46

Feel you OP. Little s&it's. Had something on my door, not egg, maybe slime and heard a huge bang. Will go out tomorrow to look properly. I have them on cctv. Not decided if to let it go, will assess tomorrow

ImJustAGirlInACountrySong · 31/10/2024 22:48

You actually wrote 'candy!!?

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 31/10/2024 22:50

While I would hope no one smashes it, there is a band called the smashing pumpkins, so it seems to have precedence. I can't imagine that the police would care. Sorry your fun was soured.
