Hi,

My daughter had a uti at A&E as she kept being sick around two weeks ago. She was given a three day course of antibiotics and that was that. Her symptom during the uti was mainly vomiting (at night mostly).

Anyways, she's been ill on and off for the last 1.5 months since starting nursery and post the antibiotics she did perk up a lot more.

The GP wanted us to do a repeat urine sample to double check the uti has gone as I mentioned another episode of vomiting post antibiotics. He gave me the pot however shortly after that (the next day) I started feeling really unwell and have been unwell for the past week. I've got a chest infection and have been given steroids to help with my symptoms ... I feel awful that I didn't manage to get the second repeat urine sample in.

She had a follow up appointment (these appointments are to check she's gaining weight as she lost some weight since all these illnesses after starting nursery) and I mentioned the one vomiting episode she had this week and GP asked if she was constipated and I said yes. He said constipation can cause vomiting in babies as there's nowhere for the food to go so it comes back up.

Anyways, her wee seems slightly darker to me still and I feel awful that she maybe needed more antibiotics due to her wee colour but because I wasn't well enough to drop of a sample she's had these symptoms for two weeks (although she had three day course within these three weeks) I worry I've caused damage to her kidneys and it's eating me alive. I tried to get her to do a sample the day of the follow up appointment but I missed both times and it went everywhere but inside the pot.

Have I damaged her kidneys in the last two weeks? I'll try and get her to do a sample before nursery on Monday... I'm so worried I feel sick

How old is she?
And did the Dr suggest anything for the constipation?

UTIs and constipation can often go hand in hand with toddlers, particularly if they are withholding either one.

I've started giving her laxatives (I think that's what they're called?) for the constipation and she's 10 months old

You need to discuss this with the GP not Mumsnet!

Ah, probably not withholding then. And it's usually a stool softener like cosmocol.

think you just need to discuss it with the gp again. But I doubt you'd caused any extra damage, doesn't sound like she's showing serious signs of pain

Vomiting isn't usually a sign of a uti. Seems an odd course of treatment.

user242526 · 26/10/2024 22:40

@bluebsheets I've mentioned what the gp said and how I've been unwell and didn't drop the sample off. I'm just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences as I've still got Sunday to go then I'll drop off the sample on Monday.

Sorry OP. IMO, no-one can give you a proper opinion unless medically trained and having examined your child. An internet forum can’t give you a proper opinion. We can give untrained opinion, but I don’t know that will help, as all cases are individually different.

@Frozensun I understand. I just feel anxious about it after Google searching it and Monday feels so far away :( but I do understand what you mean
