To ask what I can do to keep us all entertained?

DB is doing a rare visit for the day during half term. He is childfree. My DC are 5, 5, and 2.

Any suggestions for what we might do that will entertain everyone, ideally allow me some time to chat with DB, but not be hellish like soft play in the school holidays?

None of the DC will happily sit for more than a few mins in a cafe etc. If we stay home, they are likely to need constant reminders not to bash each other over the head etc.

I live in a decent size town with all the usual amenities.

What kind of thing might work for us, or have you done successfully in a similar situation?

Take the children and DB to an indoor aquarium. Hopefully it will keep them entertained and you and db can chat.

Steam train ride?

Visit a farm/petting zoo? There's usually a playground too with plenty of opportunity for them to run around and wear themselves out! Being realistic, with 3 small children, you're not going to have a lot of time to sit and have a long chat! Your DB will understand that you've got your hands full and will hopefully be on board to play with the kids too. Can he not stay for the evening so you can get the kids to bed and sit down for a catch up?

Something outside. Kids that age tend to entertain themselves better outside. Maybe a National Trust property where you can all wander the gardens.

park, cafe, playground would be my choice if the weather is ok.

Thanks all! I'm a bit nesh so so far aquarium is the most tempting. All great ideas though!
