Just had Reiki for the first time

And I’m really shaken up!
I wasn’t expecting anything and in fact went in very closed.
As soon as she hovered her hands over my face and head I could feel extreme heat coming off them. My face was burning. Then as she moved down my chakras I had my eyes closed and saw lots of colours in a flower like formation, opening and closing - purple, green, pink and yellow.

I could feel twitching and tugging sensations wherever she was hovering her hands over, my knee, my reproductive organs and my shoulder had a lot of heat radiating from them.

I had a kind of release, a rush of endorphins towards the end of the session.

What was also odd, is that I have ADHD and normally my brain never stops , but I was actually able to just focus on the colours when I shut my eyes and my brain was clear. It kept wandering off a few times, but I managed to pull it back again which is fairly unusual for me.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with reiki?

It gave me a terrible headache.

endofanera23 · 22/10/2024 14:33

I went in hoping for some kind of 'experience' but didn't feel anything. I did, however, enjoy the heated bed and relaxing music, but should have just got a massage or something.

JacquesHarlow · 22/10/2024 14:42

I don't understand @Daisychain1989 - what is unreasonable here? What is your question?

MrsMagoooo · 22/10/2024 14:44

You ABU about posting in AIBU without an AIBU question 😂

Did you just want to tell us about your Reiki?

Garlicbest · 22/10/2024 14:47

Did she give you mushroom tea in the waiting room? 😂

Daisychain1989 · 22/10/2024 14:51

AIBU to feel these things and to ask if anyone else has had them I guess? Maybe it would have been better on chat!

I had a short session of reiki once at a healing fair and it was very pleasant as you describe. I then went to the same person who did that for a longer session to help with my migraines. I had much the same experience as you very relaxing and it felt powerful, could see all these different colours exactly as you say.

After she was very sure I would be migraine free for a long period and to come back to her when they came back. I got a migraine on the way home and then another one later that same week. No reduction at all. I don’t know if it’s total rubbish but I never went back, same goes for homeopathic medicine didn’t help at all. Also Magnet therapy, reflexology and hypnosis were all duds for me.

I have had some benefits from aromatherapy, herbalism and osteopathy. Not yet tried Chinese medicine or acupuncture which is next on my list but I’m very picky about who I see.

I felt nothing at all, but I did enjoy sitting in silence in her aromatherapy-scented room.

It's quite bizarre isn't it. I had a GP who was way too into giving alternative therapies from her NHS practice, she ended up struck off. But she gave me reiki on my abdominal pain once and I was astounded to find the pain vanished!? I had no idea what she was doing so couldn't have been biased, and I was a child. But I never understood how it worked.

twoastars · 22/10/2024 15:02

I have reiki at the beginning and end of another treatment regularly and have not experienced heat or physical feelings during it.

But after the first few sessions I started to see the colours - usually a bright violet purple in blobs and patterns that last a few minutes and then they drift away and it's black again. It is incredible and proves to me that energy can be transferred between people. I don't care if anyone thinks it's a load of rubbish because I know what I see.

Sia8899 · 22/10/2024 15:05

I’ve had it once, I feel that it’s a type of therapy that is very based on your own experience e.g. I found it very awkward, I could feel the heat of the lady’s hand and my body felt really weird as I knew I was tensing up as the lady moved over me and was looking at me while my eyes were closed. However, others feel very similar things and experience that as being the energy release and the healing working. So I can understand why people like it because they feel something, I just personally didn’t enjoy it and rationalised it

I had reiki a few years ago during a stressful time in my life. I wasn’t sleeping and felt really low, after the reiki I slept like a baby, best nights sleep I’ve ever had, I found it really relaxing and warming.

keep saying I’m going to go back and get it again,

spiritgoat · 22/10/2024 15:09

I've had it a few times during my hypnotherapy. I am certain it's all in the mind, but I don't care because it works wonders for my anxiety and physical tension. I feel the warm tingly sensation and see bright colours and shapes too. I just see it as my mind is focusing on consciously relaxing the places she's hovering over I suppose.

I miss Lockheart. She was always on these types of posts

ChampagneLassie · 22/10/2024 15:23

Like you I went in quite skeptical and I was amazed at the power of the sensations. I remember feeling very distinctly that there was warm light, like the sun in the middle of my forehead getting warmer and sort of boring into my head but in a pleasant way (sounds odd) and I became overwhelmed with sensation to laugh out loud and I opened my eyes I was sure she must have some big hot torch but it was just her hands hovering over me in a shady room. It’s so strange

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 22/10/2024 15:26

I've got magic beans if you want to buy some?

theemmadilemma · 22/10/2024 15:26

I'm a qualified reiki practitioner, though I don't practice, only on friends and family for free.

People can believe whatever they want. It may not be for everyone, but if it works for someone, don't knock it.

I initially went for a repeated health issue, and that was resolved, but I found it so helpful and calming, that I continued going and eventually decided to train myself.

The reiki is helping your body get rid of toxins so it’s quite normal to feel unwell shortly afterwards but then you should feel much better within a couple of days.

I use Reiki to help shift my own migraines and when I had Covid recently to get my body to heal itself more quickly. I even met my husband via Reiki.

However, it’s like everything else. Some practitioners have magic hands and are much better than others. I’ve had a few awful massages but plenty of lovely ones too. If you had a crap haircut, you wouldn’t assume all hairdressers are equally rubbish? Word of mouth recommendations are best.

WhappleBee · 22/10/2024 15:51

A close relative trained in this and I teased them about it. Had to apologise when they started using it on me bc it really helped. They still use it when my pain is bad and it does help! They’ve also done long distance versions on me and I always sleep better (even tho they don’t tell me they did it until the morning)! I genuinely think there’s something to it now. It’s made me much more open minded about other things, like crystals etc.

She was supposed to be one of the best in the area and trains people she had many good reviews and was well regarded she may have since died. She told me I wouldn’t have another attack for a long time and I had one immediately and had no relief at all from my condition. It simply didn’t work.

Migraine isn’t caused by toxins so removing them by any means isn’t going to help. If it works for you that’s great but it didn’t for me. I have tired a lot of alternative treatments over the years and spent a lot of money as people with chronic uncureable conditions tend to do at times looking for a fix. Unfortunately I regard the money I spent on this treatment for migraine as a waste of money, it doesn’t mean I am rubbishing reiki as a whole.

craftysnake · 22/10/2024 16:22

What a crock of shit.

What are “toxins 😃
