Agony with sinusitis… AIBU to ring 111

In absolute agony, I have sinusitis and I’ve been taking painkillers it does nothing. I’m unable to move as every time I move it makes me feel worse. I’ve been sick as I’m in so much pain and the space above my eyebrow is so swollen. I just don’t want to waste peoples time but I can’t bear with this anymore. I’ve got work tomorrow, no idea how to do it but I can’t have another day off. I’m so fed up, any tips welcome

I would definitely ring 111. I don't think they like to take chances with possible infections near the brain and so you really need proper medical advice imo.

Halfemptyhalfling · 20/10/2024 11:24

Boiling water in a mug or not too wide bowl and inhale the steam. If you wear contacts or glasses take them off. If it's only bad on one side shut the happy sides nostril so it's only going up the bad side

Skyrainlight · 20/10/2024 11:25

Yes definitely call. My husband swelled up with sinusitis a few weeks ago, the pharmacy gave him high strength ibuprophen to bring down inflammation, it took a few days.

Dotto · 20/10/2024 11:26

Pharmacist.

Pirrip · 20/10/2024 11:28

Get some medical advice, perhaps a pharmacist. I let my GP fob me off over a couple of visits when I had a sinus infection 20 years ago. Eventually one side of my face was so swollen that my eye was closed. He then took it seriously and prescribed antibiotics but I have been left with chronic sinusitis.

WitchyBits · 20/10/2024 11:30

Pharmacists can prescribe for sinusitis now so get along to them ASAP as the phone people will only tell you to go to the pharmacists anyway!

Zombieof3 · 20/10/2024 11:32

I’ve been to the pharmacy, they stated they could not provide me with anything stronger than I’m already using and advised GP, but obviously it’s the weekend x

Ring 111. Hope you feel better soon

MissMoneyFairy · 20/10/2024 11:33

It's swollen, when I had this I needed antibiotics and painkillers, after that I kept getting it and I think you should call 111.

randoname · 20/10/2024 11:35

I’d worry about orbital cellulitis. Get to ooh, urgent care or A&Enof you don’t have one of those. In the mean time chew gum and alternate hot and cold drinks.

OP, look at youtube for the videos how to dislodge the blockage of sinuses.

I remember a few years ago suffering from one from absolute hell. After tilting my head and massaging my forehead the green gunk started flowing out.

If it’s a regular occurrence get yourself a sinus rinsing device.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 20/10/2024 13:10

And make sure you emphasise that your head is swollen. That's the key thing for them to know. Good luck.

thistlepiedpiper · 20/10/2024 13:54

Hope all goes well. I had my worst sinus infection in march, it's still fresh in my memory, you have my sympathies!

Do you have any discharge at all? Or is it all contained making your face feel like it's going to explode?
What painkillers are you taking? I found anti-inflammatory medication gave the most relief
Don't use decongestants, it will make it worse (told to me by gp after wrongly using them for 5 days)
Sleep if you can. It's the only way I could make it from day to night

As soon as I got antibiotics I was on the mend from 2 days. It did take 2 lots of different antibiotics and a month but once I had the right ones it cleared up

Zombieof3 · 20/10/2024 14:48

Thank you everyone, I’ve got an appointment in OOH in an hour, Im hoping they’re able to do something xx

Boots own brand sinus medication (with decongestant) is the best OTC sinus meds I have found.

And regular use of a Neti pot helps moving forward.

You will probably need antibiotics to sort this out.

Octonaut4Life · 20/10/2024 14:52

If you haven't already, get to the pharmacy and buy a NeilMed sinus rinse and start rinsing your sinuses out. Sounds gross but 100% the best thing to do to help with the pain

WeddingShmedding · 20/10/2024 15:35

Hope you get some antibiotics, it definitely sounds like you've passed the point of managing it with anything over the counter. I got it after a hospital stay it can be such a nasty infection and so painful. Hope you feel better soon.

BabyCloud · 20/10/2024 15:40

Any pharmacies open local to you? They can give you antibiotics for sinusitis. I had it recently and they also prescribed me a steroid spray for my nose.

Sudafed pressure tablets are also good.

Zombieof3 · 20/10/2024 17:23

The gp has prescribed Phenoxymethylpenicillin, naproxen and lanzoprazole. I’m hoping this helps xx

This definitely helped when I had terrible sinusitis. I found pressing on one bit of my cheekbone caused an absolute waterfall and gave me some relief for a bit

I have chronic sinusitis, I feel your pain. Definitely ring 101 and ask for some strong painkillers paracetamol and ibuprofen just don’t cut it with sinusitis. I know it sounds lame but when I’ve been in my worse pain the only thing that brought me some relief for 30 mins was boiling water, towel over head and bowl and breathe for ten mins.

Murfmeister · 20/10/2024 17:45

It's taken me two lots of antibiotics to get some relief after my last bout. I seem to get it quite often and the pain is crippling.
Hope you are on the mend soon x

Sinushiiitus · 20/10/2024 17:46

I can see the swelling, must be so uncomfortable. Hope you feel better soon now you have got some meds.
What worked for me is a hot microwaveable beanbag across my face and especially over the nose/cheek area. Plus taking Beconase, Otrivine sinusitis and pain meds. Hope you feel better soon Flowers
