PUPPY IN GARAGE

JasperBoo · 19/10/2024 22:01

My nephew and his wife are keeping their new puppy in the garage, because they don't believe that dogs should be allowed in living areas.

The garage is at the end of the garden, not attached to the house, and currently contains all the usual rubbish you fill your garage with.

The plan is to empty it, add heating etc, and make it into an office space with the dog in, rather than a dumping ground, but they've been saying that for years.

They say that he will always live outside, and that they will get someone in to train him as a guard dog.

I am really upset at the thought of this puppy being left alone and scared, in a cold, dark, garage, when he could be living inside with the family.

The family will be with him outside when they have time, but they have 2 young kids, 2 cats, and a busy online "influencer" business.

(They have time to use him for their Instagram posts mind you!)

I have sent them info about the RSPCA campaign to change the law so dogs can't be kept outside. I have flagged the risk of getting someone in to train the dog to be a guard dog, rather than taking time themselves to train him to just be a loving family dog. (He's a doberman type).

But right now, I'm mostly just in bits that there is a little puppy being left outside on his own in the garage when he could be having a loving life inside with the family.

They bought him to be a guard dog, and an Instagram tool.

It breaks my heart.

My sister and mum have completely turned on me, because I put a message on their Instagram post of the puppy, asking for a photo of the garage he was living in, and asking why he couldn't live in the house. My sister went as far as to say I'm no longer part of her family if I'm "going for" her son like that.

I did ask them on a private what's app message when i first heard they had a puppy, and they outright lied to me saying he wouldn't be left outside, when this is what they had planned all along apparently. (I live 3 hours from them, it was my sister, his mum, that told me initially, then I saw messages on the Instagram post confirming he wasn't allowed in the house)

Am I being unreasonable to be so worried about this puppy? I honestly am not sure what to do next.

Out them on SM.

Out them on SM.

This. Fucking animal abusers.

AtlasPine · 19/10/2024 22:04

No. Absolutely not. Poor dog. I’m not sure if it’s beyond the threshold of cruelty to allow the pup’s removal though. It was perfectly acceptable practice not many years ago and still is in many parts of the world. But UK in winter?

Scutterbug · 19/10/2024 22:05

That’s horrendous and sadly the RSPCA won’t do anything because they are useless. If it were me I’d have to go and take the puppy back to mine! What breed is it? Being isolated from people will lead to socialisation issues which with certain breeds could be a real danger.

FFSWherearemyglasses · 19/10/2024 22:06

WTAF!!! …. Think this pup needs to be “stolen”
they are absolute twats

ExtraOnions · 19/10/2024 22:06

Depends .. if they change it into a heated comfortable space, and spend time with the dog out there.

Sounds like a similar set up to Kennels.. and they seem to function fine.

Don’t dogs, all over the world, routinely live outside ?

Tulipvase · 19/10/2024 22:07

I don’t necessarily disagree with dogs in kennels (I wouldn’t) but that’s dogs plural. Not a solitary puppy being kept on its own.

I’m not sure what you can do realistically though.

Reserved101 · 19/10/2024 22:07

Yeah, out them on their socials (repeatedly) and otherwise cut these awful scumbags out of your life.

Yes, and they’re a fucking nuisance … oh and their owners are also twats

MissyB1 · 19/10/2024 22:08

You need to be very stern with them about this, clearly tell them this is neglect and abuse. Tell them you will report them to animal charities.

It reads like they already have the pup in poor conditions 😕 I could understand if they converted BEFORE getting the pup

Every outside dog, in every country in the world , that lives outside is a nuisance & thier owners are twats ??

Clamfoo · 19/10/2024 22:11

Its cruel by todays standards. The dog will crave company, not being locked alone in a garage. But I doubt it is illegal.

Gloriia · 19/10/2024 22:13

How old, not a tiny 8 weeker surely?!

Clamfoo · 19/10/2024 22:14

They'll probably be getting its ears clipped next. Evil bastards.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 19/10/2024 22:14

That’s horrible. In the wild, pups would stay with their families until at least 2 or 3 YEARS old. Taking them away from their mum at a few weeks old and sticking them in a garage on their own is barbaric. I have a friend who bought two puppies of a similar breed as guard dogs earlier in the year, and they have always lived outside in a kennel. Not something I’d do, but at least they had each other, it was the beginning of summer and They are on a busy farm with lots going on. Not in a fucking garage at the end of a garden.

Oh shut up! Puppies should not be left outside in a shitty garage. Whatever petty point you have is irrespective.

I can’t comment on every outside dog in every country in the world 🙄 but the ones that I know of … Yes, they’re all a nuisance and are twats

DaisyChain505 · 19/10/2024 22:18

Absolute scum. This is a living animal that needs love, attention, interaction and stimulation.

report them, out them, shame them, don’t give up.

StarDolphins · 19/10/2024 22:22

This is absolutely disgusting & I would tell them so. It’s neglect, cruel & abusive. Why bother getting a puppy to isolate it😭 heartbreaking.

I would disown them, make a massive thing of it & out them as far & wide as I could. Poor, poor puppy deserves so much more.

Noseybookworm · 19/10/2024 22:22

This sounds like animal cruelty and should be reported to the RSPCA. The garage is a dangerous environment for the puppy if there is all sorts of junk in there that he could hurt himself on! I would tell your mum and sister that they are being complicit in the mistreatment of the puppy and shame on them.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 19/10/2024 22:23

Some working dogs are kept outside, but then there is usually more than one and they aren’t puppies. What is the point in getting a dog if you leave it outside all the time?

No, dogs don’t routinely live outside. They live inside with the people that are meant to love & care for them. Who the fuck wants to be taken away from its mum & be sentenced to a life on its own. Either get a pet & cherish it as part of the family or don’t bother.

Why on earth is it ok to isolate a domesticated pet?😭

Itdoesntendwellatall · 19/10/2024 22:28

They keep the cats inside but not the puppy?

Report them. A dog in a garage alone is bad enough. Keeping a puppy in there is cruelty.

An Instagram tool. Bastards.

1983Louise · 19/10/2024 22:30

Shame on your sister and mum, if that was my son, I'd give him a bollocking and take the puppy.
