Shamelessly posting here for traffic. Went to a local park today with a friend and both of us and our DCs were suddenly covered in small bugs. They almost seemed to be coming down from the trees and up from the grass as we were absolutely covered, I'm taking 10s to 100s all over us. Hoods, coats, clothes, shoes, hair... my shoe alone must have had 20 on!

Managed to ge a pic of them all over the top of a bin. Anyone got any idea what they are? I'm assuming they're not ticks because they seemed to be coming from above too but they do look similar 😬.

Feel like they're still in my hair. Any ideas what they are anyone?

The bigger photo does not look like a tic as they don't have obvious antennae.

BournardTourney · 19/10/2024 17:45

100% not ticks. Also ticks would not do well trying to climb those bins as they don’t have the grip of spiders and other insects on smoother surfaces.
edit to say I carry a tick tool I bought from Amazon - they are easy to use even on pets. If removed within 24 hours it is unlikely you will need any future treatment. If bitten monitor the bite site and health for a couple of months.
The incognito range from Holland and Barrett’s are excellent insect repellent and repels ticks

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 19/10/2024 17:49

I’ve sorry I no idea but I make sure everythings washed at 60 degrees.
I would also shower and wash my hair to get rid of any lurkers.
I would then hoover the house.
I woukd check everyone for tick bites carefully over the next week or so.

PleaseStopWithTheSmallTalk · 19/10/2024 17:49

I did think that with the antennae but they didn't all look the same and some didn't seem as noticeable, took me ages to shake them all off. Will be itching for the foreseeable.

Going to boil wash my clothes and probably myself 😅

Those aren't ticks. How many legs do they have? I can't tell from the photos.

DoctorChoc · 19/10/2024 17:55

Baby locusts?

PleaseStopWithTheSmallTalk · 19/10/2024 17:55

It was hard to tell but looks like 6, some with antennae.

Ticks are related to spiders and have eight legs. So if your bugs have 6 legs they are insects 😁. They look to me like some sort of weevil - which eat plant matter.

If you could shake them off, they weren't ticks.

weevils are distinguished by having a long nose or "rostrum", andthey're related to beetles so they have hard wingcases over their backs. But there's all sorts of other things they could be. The photos aren't the best for id - the shadows are obscuring the shape of the body.

Why? These aren't ticks.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/10/2024 18:41

Can you get a better photo.

They're not ticks, but what they are is very unclear due to the poor photo quality.

I can't unfortunately we are all home now and just took the photos as we were all trying to shake the critters out of our clothes and hair as we left so they're not great quality unfortunately.

This is a tick line up online. Their bodies more bulbous than today’s little critters

Put picture through insect identifier app it suggested aphid but wasn't sure as picture not clear enough

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/10/2024 18:42

Could be an aphid. Right shape, legs, antennae. There's lots of species. It would also explain why there were so many of them.
