To think this was anything other than a coincidence?

Yesterday morning, dd was talking about a book we used to read together when she was little. She told me she'd had a dream that night that we were reading it again.

The book had actually gone missing a few years ago. I'd spent ages looking for it and after doing several declutters of her toys, decided I must have accidentally given / thrown it away. She would often ask if I could look for it but I could never find it.

Anyway, after dropping dc at school, I needed to get my birth certificate for something. I couldn't believe it when I opened the folder ( where we keep all important bits ) and there it was. The book.
I literally felt cold as I know in the time since we lost the book I had been in this folder several times. If I'd seen the book in there I would have taken it out. It looks very out of place there.

Dp would not have put it in there. He said he didn't and I also know he rarely goes into the folder.
Dc do not have access to this folder so it couldn't have been them. It's got a number lock on too so only me and dp can get into it.

I actually felt scared, Dd mentions she had a dream about this book that's been missing for many years, then hours later it turns up in the most random of places.

Please can someone make me see this is just a coincidence and nothing spooky.

I've never heard of a ghost that makes itself useful by finding things so spooky seems unlikely. Even if this was a bit odd it would be the act of a very friendly presense that wanted to make your DC happy

Go find Auntie Matrix videos on tictoc or glitch in the matrix stories! People sharing same scenario type situations. Usually it's attributed to non sinister "spookies/ghosts" think a maternal type loving spirit just bringing the book back so the child can enjoy 😉

This reminds me of the time my mother had been looking for a certain book - they had a library room which was floor to ceiling of books, plus several additional bookshelves throughout the house. She'd spent 3 days looking for this particular one, and had exhaustively searched for it but not found it.
I turned up for lunch (not lived at home for 10+ years in which time the library room had been redecorated and the shelves cleared and rearranged, some books sold/charity shopped and replenished with others) . She told me the book was lost. I went into the library room, walked to a bookcase and picked the book off the shelf almost on autopilot. How did I know where it was?

Very strange, I suppose it has to be a coincidence really but yes it would have given me the creeps too!

My grandmother left me her engagement ring, I never wore it, but kept it in my jewellery box. Several months after her death, my mum mentioned it, I said it was in my jewellery box as I could think about wearing it. When I opened the box it wasn't there. My mum was angry, I was very upset, asked all family members, no one has seen it.
About 2 weeks later, I found it in the middle of my dressing table balancing on its stones.

The most likely explanation is that it's a coincidence. These things happen. The odds of it happening in this way are incredibly slim, but there are so many events taking place across the world every day that from time to time the incredibly unlikely actually happens. It's highly unlikely you'll win a lottery jackpot, but some people win it twice.

You can't rule out another explanation, maybe time is not a one-way direction and your daughter had the dream because you found the book. No doubt at some point you'll tell her you've found it, therefore if time flows in both directions then her past will know.

I had a similar (sort of) experience where I had a dream about a wall clock I had when I was about 4 that had a fictional character on it. I don't remember ever dreaming about if before or even thinking about it in about 40 years. I woke up, got on the bus and and got a 50p with this character on it in my change. I didn't consciously know this character featured on coins, it had just been released. The likeliest explanation is it was just a coincidence. Maybe I'd subconsciously heard about the coins being released and the dream was a result of this jogging my memory. Still a coincidence about getting the coin in my change of course.

I am a big believer in woo but I also think that there can be explanations. One is dowsing - picking up on someone's thoughts, as in the case of going straight to the bookcase. Whoever put the book there would subconsciously know where it was.
A couple of really weird things have happened to me this year, but both times there turned out to be an explanation. One was - I was due to have an operation. Was sent appointment letters and an info booklet from the hospital. I put them safely in a clear plastic wallet with a blue edge and kept it on the dining table (which we don't use) with some other papers and my laptop. I would refer to it every now and then. Then one day it vanished. DH/Dch hadn't moved it. It wasn't in the kitchen, bedroom, car, etc. I had to go to the hospital without the letter and info. Then, a fortnight after the op, it suddenly appeared back on the dining table. It left me shaking with shock.

The explanation? I had taken a calendar off the wall and put it on the table. It hung from a hook by a clip. When I put it back on the wall I must've clipped the folder behind it. Then in reverse - put calendar on the table and unclipped it, leaving folder behind.
So this is just to show that sometimes there IS an explanation, however unlikely. One day I'll tell you the other one!

I have had things happen to me like that a few times. The other day I had forgotten a pound for the locker at swimming, I opened a locker and there was a pound in there. Spooky.

But as PP said it's mostly likely odds/luck. I like to thing I have someone looking out for me :)

I think this is a clear example of our brains only seeing what we expect them to see. You probably put the book there absentmindedly all those years ago. Every time you looked for your documents you ignored it or didn’t see it because you weren’t expecting to see it in that particular place. The conversation with your daughter triggered the memory of her book, which is probably what made you notice it when you next opened the cupboard.

Skyrainlight · 19/10/2024 12:32

I don't see it as a coincidence or as spooky, it's great. It's affirming that there is more to this world than we understand in a good way.

That's what I would have said for this scenario. And I love a good woo tale.

I wore a locket to my grandfathers funeral. It was a present he'd given my grandma and she gave it to me. It meant a lot to me, my mother and my grandmother that I wore it. I put it in a jewellery box, back in my bedside drawer and we've never seen the box or the locket since. We've moved the furniture and it's nowhere to be seen. My mum - to her credit as she has a nasty temper- has never blamed me. She's not especially woo but she attributes this to the universe.

We've definitely lost things in my parents house and they've turned up in places we've looked in before though. We reckon it's the bad fairy. I think she has the locket.
