To feel conflicted about going on benefits for the first time?

I’ve always been employed, but after being paid off from my last job where I was treated horribly, I’m now claiming benefits for the first time as my savings are dwindling. I never thought I’d be in this position, and I’m not sure how to feel about it. Anyone else been in a similar situation?

Well, it's there as a lifeline for us all when we need it, so clearly you need it.

Are you able to work?

We pay into the system so it is there to protect us (and others) while we are vulnerable. You shouldn't feel bad about it.

I felt odd claiming child benefits, as I’ve never claimed anything before.

I am, I just haven’t been successful in securing a new job yet, but I’m actively looking.

It's designed to support those in need, if you're in need then there's no shame in claiming what you're entitled to.

Your "job" at the moment is looking for work, don't feel conflicted for using something that you've paid into for years.Good luck in the job hunting.
