Can coughing cause vomiting in babies?

Hi,

My daughter has been vomiting like once a day (there was one day of her vomiting 3/4 times a day) since last Monday.

I posted a thread on here and got some advice in regards to a UTI causing it. We went to A&E and got given antibiotics (3 day course).

However, my daughter is still being sick around once a day - mainly at night ... she has an awful cough and I'm wondering could this be causing the vomiting?

Should I take her to the GP or do antibiotics take time to work (she's reached the end of her three day course)

Thanks

I’d definitely take her to the GP but yes when my daughter/ and me has a cough we vomit. The diaphragm contracting moved the stomach and causes us to vomit ( obviously not a dr) but yes talk to a GP just in case

Take her to the GP coughing is not a symptom of UTI and the antibiotics needed for a cough would be different.

@Mylifeiswrecked no I mean the vomiting is a symptom of uti but because she's still vomiting even after the antibiotics for her uti, I'm wondering is it the cough causing the vomiting?

Yes.

In both babies and adults it is possible for coughing to trigger vomiting.

DD always used to end up throwing up when she had a bad cough.

Coughing hard triggers my gag reflex so I vomit. My kids are the same.

Yes coughing definitely can. But if she was vomiting due to a diagnosed UTI, and after antibiotics the symptoms haven't stopped, I think it's worth just checking with the dr.
It's probably the cough, but maybe she needs more antibiotics? It could also be the antibiotics causing it of course.

And whooping cough (pertussis) can absolutely cause this and can be dangerous in babies so please ask GP to check this too.

Mylifeiswrecked · 16/10/2024 11:34

@user242526 if your baby has a UTI so severe that it caused the lungs to be involved and therefore a cough then 3 days antibiotics was not appropriate and your child should be seen urgently by a GP.

It is however much more likely that the child has a cough unrelated to the UTI. In this situation then the child should still see a GP as the cough is continuing and needs to be medically assessed. As another poster has already suggested that cough could be Pertussis (known as Whooping cough) which can be serious in young children.

Yes, coughing can cause vomiting in little ones. My 1 and 2 year old have recently had bad coughs that have caused them to vomit. I would assume the cough and the UTI are completely unrelated. If you are worried about the UTI persisting, does she still have other symptoms? High temperatures etc?
