Urgent advice on car insurance please

Met44 · 10/10/2024 20:44

DD (19) has a black box on her car. There was a problem with her car and DH friend, who works at a garage came and got it, he had it for 2 days because it also needed a MOT.
DD has received notification from insurance company that they are cancelling her insurance due to dangerous driving during these 2 days.

We informed them and they have asked for confirmation from garage that car was there.
He is stalling, not sure if he put it through garage books??

They are going to cancel I. 2 days time if we don't provide evidence. Is there anything we can do please?

contact the garage directly surely?

tamarilove · 10/10/2024 20:45

aside from that, no nothing you can do

tamarilove · 10/10/2024 20:45

i imagine she’ll be getting a speeding fine in the post soon

Bloxse · 10/10/2024 20:47

Cancel it before they cancel her insurance because it’ll show up saying that insurance company has cancelled insurance, and she’d have to declare it when applying for insurance

This is really important. It will be really difficult to get insurance again if a company has cancelled your policy.

Itsdefinitelytimeforanamechange · 10/10/2024 20:49

There was a previous thread on this, poster had a nightmare when insurance company had cancelled their insurance - can’t remember exact details but massive implications for getting insurance again. Make sure you do really thorough research on this in the next 2 days and act quickly to avoid anything permanent on their record

ThisVividDreamer · 10/10/2024 20:52

The garage should've provided you with an invoice and a copy of the MOT certificate, both of which should also have the date on them. Will the insurance company accept these as evidence?

twomanyfrogsinabox · 10/10/2024 20:52

Don't you have a dated bill from the garage? Ask for photographic evidence of the dangerous driving, hopefully that will show the actual driver. If there is a speeding offence there should be a photograph.

tamarilove · 10/10/2024 20:52

They have cancelled the insurance already unfortunately
this is a 48 hour grace period to allow the driver to find an alternative insurer?

tamarilove · 10/10/2024 20:53

presumably you have the mot cert with the date on it?

BlueMum16 · 10/10/2024 20:55

DS has a black box in my car. He has to have his phone blue tooth on and connected to be insured.

It might track me driving. I have no idea but I have separate insurance.

Can you ring and discuss?

Met44 · 10/10/2024 21:51

Thank you everyone. She does have a MOat cert. I'm going to phone them tomorrow, we have asked DH friend to provide letter that he had the car for 2 days but he isn't replying.

Will cancel it if they won't accept the cert as evidence

angellinaballerina7 · 10/10/2024 21:56

Does your black box not have a route tracker? Ones I’ve seen used to show where you’d been, the time, and how they’d rated the drive (including an explanation why).

edit - sorry, you would also need the garage to agree they’d had it.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2024 21:59

Some fucking friend eh!

He's stalling and not replying because he knows he's been dicking about in a car that isn't his, he's only insured to drive for work purposes and has landed you and your DD in trouble.

Definitely expect a speeding fine through the door, so find out his address and details asap so you can pass them on to the police.

I'd also threaten to tell his boss that he's been taking cars to sort out off the radar/not through the books, presuming he works for someone else.

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2024 22:01

I;d also look for any evidence you have that DD was not driving the car at any point during those days - receipts from stores, home CCTV etc - so that when they say 'well she was doing 90mph down the M4 at 2am' you can show that she was eating McDonalds 50 miles away.. or something.

Eyerollexpert · 10/10/2024 22:02

My son had his insurance cancelled because they sent an email asking him about not using his car for a few weeks, it went to my email and I didn't reply in time. There was no persuading them(Hastings) to not canc, like talking to a brick wall.I felt awful and spent hours asking advice and explaining to different companies with no luck. I then went into Hastings website and reinserted him no problem??? That was months ago and leason learned but weird.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/10/2024 22:05

Why do you need to go through the friend? can you not just contact the garage directly? and send a copy of the invoice from the garage to the insurance company?

tiktokontheclock · 10/10/2024 22:11

The OP has said the friend isn't replying

I know. Hence the suggestion to contact the garage!

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2024 22:24

I suspect the garage won't have a clue, as the 'friend' has done this as a favour to a mate off the books, outside normal hours. Once OP does that, any idea of using telling the boss as leverage to get 'friend' to prove he was the one driving goes out the window!

Exactly, contact the garage rather than going through the friend, he’s clearly not going to reply.

How did she pay for the work? It’ll show on her tank statement that matches the date on the mot so that’s proof the car was in the garage.

How was it booked in? Any confirmation of the day it was booked in? Email/text confirmation?

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/10/2024 22:35

Don't these black boxes have trackers on them that show where the vehicle was, or have I misunderstood how that works.

Surely that would show where the vehicle was, backing up DDs version of events.

Met44 · 11/10/2024 10:43

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes I think the friend is doing this work on the sly, DH is concerned about getting him in trouble as he did us a favour.

DH
paid him in cash, but we do have a MOT cert as some kind of proof. DD did get an email the first day warning her that the driving wasn't good.
I told DH to tell his friend about the box and he didn't! That's a whole other thread!

Im going to phone them today and worse case cancel the insurance before they cancel first.

Is this Hastings direct? They are notorious for it. My DS had insurance cancelled as not driving while away on holiday. Got him a non black box policy with Admiral instead
