Eon just capped (cut off) our gas when installing smart meter

Just had Eon in to fit gas and electric smart meters. The engineer advised that there was a sooty residue in the gas boiler cupboard so they have capped (cut off) the gas for safety. Fortunately I have been able to book our usual gas engineer in for tomorrow to reconnect it (£60 + vat). The engineer says that 9 times out of 10 it's fine but they have to follow safety protocols. Our gas engineer is incensed and says that gas companies do this a lot for no good reason. Meanwhile we have no heating or hot water. Anyone else had this?

Regs change and become more strict over time for a reason.

But they don't change retrospectively.

I am resisting a smart meter as long as I can (EDF are very persistent). I see on the BBC today they have discovered Northern areas use a different system and a doctor in Glasgow has had SIX installed and none yet works! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq52382zd1no

They haven't "discovered". It was a conscious decision to use radio technology in the north rather than mobile phone technology, presumably because when the smart meter roll out started out, mobile phone coverage in the north was dire. It's improved immensely over the last 10 years.

I'm sorry they are not highly trained or qualified! they are referred to as meter maids in the industry. I work for a team of gas engineers and the meter installers are just a nuisance!! its October and getting cold, with the influx of breakdowns the industry certainly does not need these idiots going around capping appliances off, leaving people without heating of hot water until their gas engineer can get to them, which will have to be paid for.

Once the engineer has been and has found that there is no fault I would forward the invoice on to Eon and they can pick the cost!!!!

My dad and brother have both worked in this industry for years. Smart meter fitters are not the same as standard meter readers. They train for months before they are qualified. They have to redo the gas and electricity safety courses every six months. They are closely audited and if they don't follow safety procedures they will lose their jobs.

It happened to me yesterday. It is absolute disgusting and disgrace ! They cut off my gas supply yesterday for a sign of residue. There was no warning before from supplier that can happen and how to prepare etc. I made a complaint to Eon about it and will take it further if necessary .

Yet another reason I will resist to the last having to get a smart meter.....

So will I if I don't turn up next day because of stress and sleepless night!
If they want to play that game, smart meter provider should have gas boiler specialist on the hand to assess equipment on the day! I have never came across anything like that in my whole life! We leave in 21st century, this is disgrace in my opinion.

Yep happened to me years ago. They capped the gas off because the ignition on the gas hob was broken we had been using a lighter for years with no problem. We were left without oven hob heating and hot water for a couple of days. I was really angry tbh

It's literally a criminal offence for them under the gas safety installation and use regulations, to connect a gas supply to an installation that isn't safe, and that involves checks of the flue/combustion/gas rate or pressure/pressure drop/let by. The moment they touch it they are responsible for whatever they reconnect/recommission.
