Just want to send thoughts from across the pond and hope for everyone's safety and well-being x

Not me, but I have a friend who lives in Tampa. The ground floor of his home is 4 feet off the ground, and during Helene the flood level was 3 feet.

He is watching Milton carefully...

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/10/2024 20:10

Thank you! I live in Asheville which got the brunt of Helene and I really feel for the poor Floridians as well as being incredibly relieved that this one won't come our way, at least I hope not.

Wellfuckmesideways · 08/10/2024 20:14

It is certainly a scary time for those in the path. I hope it's not as bad as they say.

PiggieWig · 08/10/2024 20:16

Sending thoughts from here too. I have a friend in Orlando who has just evacuated. It must be really daunting - I hope it breaks before there’s too much damage to people’s homes and livelihoods

suburberphobe · 08/10/2024 20:20

Thoughts and best wishes from me too. Keep safe everyone.

liveforsummer · 08/10/2024 20:20

I have friends who have just gone out for a holiday of a lifetime to Disney world. Sounds scary!

Rocknrollstar · 08/10/2024 20:22

I have friends who live south of Tampa and are under mandated evacuation. They are virtually sitting in a traffic jam all the way to Miami,

QueenOfHiraeth · 08/10/2024 20:24

@VeryQuaintIrene There are all sorts of terrible stories on social media saying Asheville is in a terrible state and not getting assistance. Is that true? Are you OK there?
Sending love to all affected wherever you are

How are things on the ground now?
We don't seem to be getting the full picture in the UK.

It isn't really going to hit until tomorrow. I have a friend flying in from Europe tomorrow afternoon. The plan was she would stay with me for 2 nights and then go back to her home in Florida - her home right in the area which looks like it will be landfall for Milton. She has no idea if her house will still be standing when she eventually gets home. Her entire area is evacuated and still recovering from Helene which caused severe flooding.

It is awful. And yet Trump is leading in Florida. He denies climate change while hurricanes are gaining force because of the gulf temperatures rising. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/10/2024 20:37

@QueenOfHiraeth @stayathomegardener
Thanks for your good wishes. Lots and lots of support is coming into Asheville from both private and government sources (allegedly Trump and his supporters are peddling a lot of misinformation about this, shame on them) but the crisis is of such magnitude that we could have twice what's coming and still there would be a lot of people in real trouble. The worst thing is the lack of running water and no clear timetable on when it will come back. I know 3 people who've lost their houses though I personally was incredibly lucky (and I am even luckier to be in London right now - quite dreading going back, TBH.)

Not to derail the thread but my MIL landed in florida yesterday for a disney holiday with friends- can anyone tell me how worried we should be/what advice we can pass on/anything we can do for her?

Newsenmum · 08/10/2024 20:42

Also thinking of everyone! This might sound silly, but how on earth do you prepare for a hurricane if you can’t evacuate?

stayathomegardener · 08/10/2024 20:46

@VeryQuaintIrene that sounds more positive than I expected, glad the support is coming through.

Tell her to watch this channel. He's a very well respected meteorologist on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/live/GQCOr1zJoFo?si=qN5APer2o2UbCEaV

Disney is closed Wednesday & Thursday and potentially the rest of the week & weekend depending on storm surge

Wineatfiveisfine · 08/10/2024 20:52

@VeryQuaintIrene - the footage coming out of Asheville looks terrifying!

I have a friend in Tampa and they’ve been prepping / boarding up windows etc. It looks so, so scary 💔

User100000000000 · 08/10/2024 20:53

Scrap that, Disney is now closing at 1pm tomorrow (local time)

Sending love and wishes of safety from Ireland ❤️
