To Want To Go Back To 1983?

Just seen some video clips from the time that made me nostalgic.

Surely it’s not so far away that we can’t just reach out and grab it ?

I would go to 1995. Oh yes I would.

DixonD · 07/10/2024 18:58

I’d love to! I’d be a baby!

Sethera · 07/10/2024 18:59

What were the video clips?

What were the video clips?

Of kids programs around that time .. Swap Shop, Saturday Superstore etc

Serious threat of nuclear war?

I liked the music and fashion but it wasn't all good. It depends how old you were. If you were a teenager with no responsibility any time is good (for me 1972) but I was 28 with a child in 1983.

They were great shows. You'd have to go back slightly earlier to catch SwapShop as Superstore superseded it in 1982.

I know it's largely nostalgia and that those times had problems of their own, but I can't help but feel that in some ways life truly was better back then.

I do wonder how it felt to live as an adult in the 80s. I was a child, so of course that makes a huge difference. No real responsibilities, shielded from most worries, with so many more possibilities still ahead, and a feeling that magic was real and life was sure to be easy and wonderful. I haven't had a bad life at all, but adulthood tends to feel much more muted and grey, by comparison.

SantaToSSD · 07/10/2024 19:25

I don't know, I was an adult in 1983. I'd go back, definitely.

Thursdaygirl · 07/10/2024 19:26

I would have been 13 in 1983. The music and fashion was such good fun, I don’t think the optimism and pace of that time has ever been replicated.

In 83 I was still a kid but give me 1993 and all the sex, drugs and rave it gave me. A bloody marvellous year, oh yes!

Uricon2 · 07/10/2024 19:35

It had pros and cons as every era does, but I'd go back (the music for a start, but we're still got that)

I'd also like to gently slap my unconfident 20 year old self upside her head and tell her she was gorgeous and to make the most of it Grin but that's youth for you, never appreciated until it's long gone.

Everythingwillbeokay · 07/10/2024 19:35

I was 9 and a slightly odd kid but I would also give anything to go back. I have quite a yearning sometimes, to do with missing my Mum who died six years ago, and my grandparents. I also sometimes feel that we should be able to touch it. I don't fully understand where it's all gone.

Squidwitch · 07/10/2024 19:36

I'd give a year of my life to go back for a week, I was 7, I'd spend the day in the park, in my dad's shed listening to his cb radio, playing sindys with my mum, probably arguing with my sister, and in the evening we'd all have dinner together, with pudding.. God I truly wish I could, just to cuddle my Dad again, be called squirrel and fall asleep in absolute contentment

Babbadoobabbadock · 07/10/2024 19:39

I'd be playing out age 9 and dancing to karma chameleon . Bikes, roller boots, Sindy dolls, I'd go back tomorrow

It wasn't better, it's just you were younger.

DustyMaiden · 07/10/2024 19:45

I got married in 84 so that’s a tough question.

bergamotorange · 07/10/2024 19:47

I agree with @MasterBeth , it wasn't an optimistic time at all, unemployment, urban decline, social tension, cold war.

idrinkandknowthings · 07/10/2024 19:52

If we went back to this day in 1983 my mum would have another 5 days before she gave birth to 9lb 10oz Me!

twentysevendresses · 07/10/2024 19:53

I was in my first year at college...bloody loved it! Best year ever 🙌🏼🥳🍻

Drivingoverlemons · 07/10/2024 19:54

I was thinking the other day, that my favourite era so far has been the early 80s. (I was a child so had no concerns about nuclear war or Thatcher). Good TV, adults seemed to often have parties we got to go to, and school was great. We didn’t even wear a uniform. And although I was a 90s teen I secretly prefer early 80s pop. I have happy memories of church hall discos.

Differentstarts · 07/10/2024 19:57

But then I wouldn't exist 😭😭

bergamotorange · 07/10/2024 19:59

Good TV, adults seemed to often have parties we got to go to, and school was great. This can be summed up as 'I was a happy kid'. It's not the decade, it was your child's perspective.

True! The music was the decade though.
