Has anyone gone to their local council for homeless due to fleeing abuse? What happened ? How long did it take to find a house? Did you go into temp accommodation? What was that like?

My friend did and got put in a house for victims in DV. Although it was technically a shared house, she only had somebody else there briefly on two occasions so pretty much had the house to herself and girls. I think it took her about 9 months to get a council house.

Every council will have different times & waiting lists, do you have children? Womens aid can also help with housing if you are fleeing abuse. In my city there is a special team that houses families who are at risk of homelessness, it usually takes about a day and they have a hostel for families only. Each room is a bedroom with a small kitchen & bathroom inside. People will stay there until a permanent property is found.

For adults without children there are other hostels & we also use hotels for people who would otherwise be homeless. They would stay there until a more permanent place can be found, often this is a temporary flat before a council place is available. Our city has one waiting list for council & housing association properties.

we also have a team that helps people find private rented accommodation and will help with deposit etc
