My favourite type of thread on MN is the spooky one- anyone fancy a spooky thread this year to share our stories, discuss spooks etc?

Yes, me! 🙋‍♀️ I love these threads!

I’ll start, my nan (who has since passed away) used to live in a cottage that was built in the 1700’s. We used to stay there as kids with and without my parents.
Loads of strange things happened in there, the kettle would constantly boil itself, the TV would turn itself onto standby when the remote was nowhere near anyone and often would hear footsteps running up and down.

One night my sister woke everyone up screaming as she’d heard loads of smashing and banging downstairs, all the saucepans in the pantry were on the floor. I often had horrible nightmares and sleep paralysis in there.

My mum also says that she would on occasion hear our voices shouting ‘mum, come here’ from upstairs when we were outside. I didn’t like staying there much 😳

It was spooky, the pantry was a decent size and had a number of shelves across one wall. The bottom shelf was wide and the pans were placed/stacked on here. No way they could have fallen and the shelf was sturdy and still in tact.

My mum is a bit woo and she claims to have seen things there when we’d stayed, she’d often see people or smell cigarette smoke. One night she woke up and saw a man dressed in an old fashioned suit and top hat stood at the end of the bed, he was sideways on looking at the bedroom door which went to the landing and he apparently had an angry expression on his face.

My dad is very non-woo doesn’t believe any of it but had a hard time trying to explain away him and my mum both hearing a man whistling coming from the kitchen one day when our nan had taken me and my siblings out into town and there was no one else in the house!

My mum never told me any of this until I was older after my nan had passed and the house was sold on - thankfully - otherwise I’d never of slept there!

Ooh me! I love a bit of woo.

I have never seen anything, however there have been several things in my Victorian home that we can't explain since we moved in 4 years ago. Small things, hearing a buzzing noise (like a phone on vibrate) and tracking it down to the empty coffee table where there was nothing to make a sound. We both saw a white cat jump off our bed while we were reading in bed, there was no white cat.

This week my son has had his Lego out, mainly figures that he has spread out on a lid on his rug. While I was leaning on his bed talking to him something dropped, I turned and saw a Lego head still moving like it'd been dropped but there was nowhere to drop from. When I said it was strange my son said, "oh, yes, it did that in the night and woke me up and then again when my eyes were open but no one was there"!

I have never felt creeped out or scared in my house so I don't think it's anything malevolent, I don't really believe in ghosts but do sort of lean towards the theory of there being parallel dimensions stacked in a row and always think things like this is a small blip where the wrong dimension snuck through for a second.

DH and I both watched as our (then) 4 year old daughter walked into the living room with a sheet over her head. As she went in the room I thought ‘I don’t recognise that small sheet’ , and as I was worried she might fall over with it over her head, I followed her into the room to see what she was doing. But she wasn’t there, and next thing came down the stairs because she had been playing in her room!
It was weird because we had both seen it.

I worked in a school which had the reputation of being haunted. I worked a bit late one night and came from the new extension to the original Victorian part. No-one was around. As I walked along the corridor, the lights started to go out behind me. I was a bit spooked but I could hear a colleague moving tables in her classroom,so I kept walking. When I reached her room, it was in darkness and locked. I ran down the stairs! I told her and she said she'd had weird things happen in the class. There were other things happened. The secretary was carrying a tray full of cups etc and the door of the room she was heading into was closed, however it opened as she approached. She said thanks as she went in, but nobody was there and no other way out.

Lots of odd things happened in my parents old house. We were all downstairs in the front room when we heard a bang. After walking up the stairs to the landing we could see fresh ink splattered down the wall of my bedroom. It was actually running down the wall !
On another occasion we were all sat watching TV when a glass exploded on the coffee table in front of us, making us all jump. The glass all scattered on the carpet in the direction away from us and not a single piece near where we were sitting.

I've shared most of my woo stories in other threads so I'll stick to my two most recent ones, one happened just around a month ago.

Both are in our local theatre where I'm wardrobe mistress. It's a really old building and I think it was an old factory back in the day. Weird things have often happened there and I've sometimes walked into dark empty rooms and felt I was interrupting something somehow. Our lift also has a mind of its own.

First one I was backstage, we have a very long backstage corridor with rooms and cupboards that come off it. Everyone else was doing stuff around the stage so I was the one furthest along the corridor but as I was going into a cupboard I glanced up to see a man walk along right at the end of the corridor. It was where a lot of costume rooms are so I went down to see who was down there and there wasn't anyone (the rooms are locked down there anyway) and there was no way out without him coming towards me. He just looked like a normal guy in a white top and dark trousers.

Then the most recent one just around a month ago, we'd had a doors open day and I had looked out some of our precious Victorian and Edwardian outfits. These items are locked in their own cabinet within the wardrobe room which you can only access through another locked room. I was tidying up a few days later and took these old outfits to lock them away again. DH was with me in the first locked room looking at items we keep there. I went into the wardrobe with the outfits, the cabinets are right at the back of that room so I made my way carefully there but as I got close I dropped one of the blouses. I accidentally stood on it a tiny bit as I picked it up and I heard a small rip which I felt awful about, they're not in the best condition as it is but I've done everything I can to make sure they're always looked after so they don't get any worse. I picked it up and put it back on its hanger and moved along to the cabinet. As I was finding my keys to unlock the padlock on the cabinet the lights all went out in the wardrobe leaving me in pitch black. No other lights in the theatre went out and our only light switch for that room was in the room DH was in, and he didn't know where it was (it's really not obvious so you need to know where it is) and DH swears on his life that he didn't do it, I believe him. And no one else came into that room while he was there either.

I've been involved in this theatre for years and years now and those lights have never ever done that to me. There are loads in there so one might flicker or go out but never the whole lot of them in just that one room. It definitely feels like I was being told off for damaging one of the outfits. 🙈
