Get rid of the TV

Family with teens, most are on their devices for entertainment. We occasionally watch movies together, during the Christmas holidays, on a rainy Sunday afternoon etc. Youngest enjoys watching streaming content on the larger screen rather than tablet or laptop, they watch half an hour or also every day.

AIBU to think Tvs are obsolete? Do you watch movies or programmes together as a family or with your partner? I'll be honest I haven't quite got the attention span to sit through anything these days. AM thinking of getting rid of the big TV and just having a small one tucked away somewhere.

YABU = Watching programmes together on a TV screen together is still a thing
YANBU = People watch less on big TV screens get rid or downsize the TV

Some people watch lots of TV. Some people don't watch any TV. Some people watch some TV.

If you never ever watch TV, don't have a TV. If you watch loads of TV, keep the TV. HTH.

I'd rather my family didn't have heads in devices constantly our TV is on for an hour or so in the evening and maybe a bit more at the weekend especially if it's rainy we will watch a film etc. At least watching something together is a shared experience and you can talk to each other. DH and I have a couple of things we watch together.

Got out of bet the wrong side this morning?

We have young children and I don't let them watch stuff on devices - I prefer it to be on TV so I know what it is and can talk about/watch with them.

DH and I watch stuff together all the time.

But if you don't use it, then there's probably no point you having one.

I don't think something that one member of the household is using every day for half an hour and the other people are using occasionally for a few hours is obsolete. It's being used daily.

TheDandyLion · 05/10/2024 09:06

In the living room we replaced the TV with a projector instead because we're mostly on our devices and it means we don't have a big black box dominating the room. It's mostly on weekend evenings.

coffeesaveslives · 05/10/2024 09:07

Our TV is on everyday. Not live, but we use it for streaming stuff.

We don't have a TV. We have a projector and diy screen from the ceiling for family movie nights (in the living room, not posh). And occasionally watch a show on a laptop but no need for a TV.

Sillykits · 05/10/2024 09:47

All good feedback thanks. What projectors are good? We have a small cheap and cheerful one but you can only see a clear picture when it's completely dark in the room. I guess you need something much more powerful?

We use our tv all the time. We watch very little live tv nowadays but we stream loads of stuff. We are both gamers too. I’d like to get one of those art frame tvs so it looks nice when you’re not using it.

Cherryana · 05/10/2024 12:09

I have a Samsung frame tv. It looks like a picture when it’s not in use. I love it because it doesn’t dominate the room.

We could technically watch tv but we are not in the habit of it - we use it to stream and everything that we watch is on demand. I think that’s quite a common way to watch tv these days.

Runssometimes · 05/10/2024 12:34

We use a projector onto one of our walls. We have an AppleTV unit and it’s brilliant for family movie nights and watching as family but it’s rarely used in daytime and is never just on in the background as I find that super annoying. Means there isn’t a big screen dominating the room either.

Why on earth if you don't set much store by TV would you contemplate buying new or different kit to watch TV on?

Personally we love TV and watch a lot. Also cast other devices to watch YouTube on the TV together. Larger TV is more sociable than watching on an iPad. We tried a projector for a while when our TV was too ancient to play catch up tv. Picture and sound were way worse and it took up a tonne of space
