To not know what size a Large is?

51 replies

Aquarius1234 · 02/10/2024 15:34

These days I am a 16 for jeans and 14 or Large maybe occasionally 16 on top.
Just depends how relaxed or non tight/short the T shirts are.
I wish I was a 14 on low jeans/cargo but they are just too tight or don't fit at all.

I have large boobs so buying a winter coat is difficult. X Large is that a 16?
Large parka coat is sometimes fine others times quite tight.
Another X Large would be too big, yet I worry if I get Large it might be too fitted?
I hate ordering things online and them not fitting, but if I buy a size up its like its allowing me to put on weight?

I want to buy a Parka Coast that looks neither tight/snug nor looks big?

Does the shop not have a size guide on its website?

Dishwashersaurous · 02/10/2024 15:36

Completely utterly depends on the shop.

Every shop will have a size guide online with the measurements.

You need to get out a tap measure, and accurately measure yourself.

And then order accordingly

Itsmahoneybaloney · 02/10/2024 15:37

Usually coats come in normal sizes like 14, 16, 18 etc. A size L will be different for each brand - before you add to basket you can click 'size guide' and it should tell you what size L is equal to.

Aquarius1234 · 02/10/2024 15:37

No some online shops are weird, I don't know if X Large means a 16. (coats)

It depends on the manufacturer or style of clothes. Some popular brands class a size 16 as XXL, while others it's a large. Bit hit and miss I know 🥴🥴 I'm on the larger size and find bon marche are good fit. Yours clothing are good but tight fitting.

What online shop is this?

The majority of them have size guidelines or measurements for you to reference.

19lottie82 · 02/10/2024 15:39

There should be a size chart on the website.

to be exact you’re best measuring a coat that fits and comparing it to that, rather than going on a clothing size. That’s what I do.

Singleandproud · 02/10/2024 15:41

You measure yourself, then compare that to the online size guide. Even dodgy Amazon and eBay pages have a size guide.

Personally I'd go a size larger anyway to allow room for jumpers.

Aquarius1234 · 02/10/2024 15:43

In normal terms a size 14 and 16 can vary sooooo much.

I can't buy short coats as I feel top heavy. An example like a short puffer coat.

OP posts:
Aquarius1234 · 02/10/2024 15:44

Sometimes it is not about the size, more about the style of coat. Its very annoying.

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 02/10/2024 15:45

Usually

XS = 6-8
S = 8-10
M = 12
L = 14
XL = 16-18
XXL = 20

But it does vary by brand

Aquarius1234 · 02/10/2024 15:46

How am I still fitting in a size Large parka I got five years ago, yet if I bought another coat same size similar style/shop it would be too tight for sure. ?

Ah that's why X Large seems much bigger than a 14. (Large)

As you said can vary depending on stores.

Totally varies by brand and style I find. I also have a large chest and am fairly top heavy so have the same struggle when trying to buy something that fits my top half and my bottom half.

Dishwashersaurous · 02/10/2024 15:48

You just need to buy from a shop that's got a size guide.

What are your actual measurements?

Comefromaway · 02/10/2024 15:49

I'll be honest though I would never buy a coat online. I have small shoulders so only certain styles fit me. Some are way too big on the shoulders but going a size down would be too small elsewhere.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/10/2024 15:51

Winter coats I always go a couple sizes up. You need to be able to wear lots of layers underneath. I'd buy a puffer coat in large even though I'm a size 8. I also like oversized knitwear so buy large in cardigans, etc.
So go bigger than you by couple sizes I reckon, in coats.

pizzaHeart · 02/10/2024 15:51

I agree that it depends on the brand and style of the coat, some of them are oversized nowadays without advertised as being oversized.
I tried size 12 jacket yesterday in Next, my size in Next is 12, could be 14 if it’s a fitting thing. The jacket was very big on me in all places. I would probably need size 8, 10 would be definitely still big. So no one can tell you, you need try them on, which is not helpful I know, but feel free to moan here.

Can you let us know what this online shop is? And do they have a size guide/measurements listed?

AnonAnom940 · 02/10/2024 15:57

I am size 16, 5ft 2. I tried on a parka in Sainsbury's and it was size large. It was very long and ample room up top. I'd need a medium.

mitogoshigg · 02/10/2024 15:59

Varies so much, my dd is moaning because she needed an extea large for a dress when she normally wears 12, designer dress!

I was on House of Fraser website looking at Ralph Lauren Sale clothing.
Did the size thing did not work for me.
Joules, Jigsaw, Crewe, Whistles other examples of difficult to work out.
I never buy from say Superdry as I can tell their stuff comes up so small.
Barbour would be very tight also.
Marks and Spencer clothing is a joke also.

I see Lauren by Ralph and Polo jackets on there - they have a size guide where the 16/XL corresponds to measurements (pic of what I see attached).

Do you mean that you measured yourself and ordered the jacket and it didn’t fit? There are lots of YouTube videos etc which show how to correctly measure.

I think you are too caught up in that the ‘size’ means - when buying online, just go with your measurements & whether you want the item fitted or oversized. The numerical size literally doesn’t matter.

I agree, 'LARGE' is a very subjective measurement.

If you were an egg you would be around weigh between 63 to 75 grammes.

(You're not an egg, are you?)
