Shops with petrol stations

Mokel · 02/10/2024 14:12

I do wish people would move from the petrol pumps if they want to do some shopping - buying a bag of sweets, I accept.

I visited a petrol station with a shop attached to it. There is a large supermarket next to it. Filled up. Was in the rear pump. Couldn’t get out as woman parked her car far away from pump. Plus there was a queue of 6 cars behind - front one right up, so reversing was out of the question.

Woman came out of shop and she had two full carrier bags. Why on earth couldn’t she park in the 6 empty bays to the side after filling up?

Cos she can't move her car until she has paid for her petrol. She probably intended to just grab bread and then saw other stuff on the way round.

Or she didn't give a shit about others.

Either way tough, you just have to wait

Of course she can move her car before paying for her petrol. Just selfish behaviour.

VenusClapTrap · 02/10/2024 14:21

I think this is pretty normal, to be honest.

bifurCAT · 02/10/2024 14:27

I've actually wondered this (maybe someone knows!)

If you fill up, can you then drive your car to the free bays (as OP suggested), get out, and THEN pay? Maybe it's all psychological, but I think most people (me included) would feel like they're driving off if they take their car away from the pump.

Absolutely agree though, OP. I hate with a fiery passion the people who do their weekly shop with their car at the pump, particularly if there is a long queue of waiting cars.

FrenchandSaunders · 02/10/2024 14:27

She could move her car before paying for petrol, but that pump won't be ready to use until she's paid, so absolutely no point!

FrenchandSaunders · 02/10/2024 14:27

Fine to grab a couple of bits in there but not do a full on fecking shop whilst there's a queue of cars waiting .... rude.

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 02/10/2024 14:31

People are simply selfish and completely unobservant.

My mind boggles at some of the stuff I see people do daily. Parking halfway across a pavement outside a school so that wheelchair and pushchair users can't get past, letting dogs bark in their gardens at 3am, pushing their way onto buses and trains before letting people get off, taking ages putting their purses away at cash machines even though there's five people behind them, not giving up their seats to the elderly, playing loud music in public - and tiktoks!! omggg!!!, swearing in the school playground, littering, interrupting people or speaking over them because they think what they have to say is more important, helping themselves to mounds of food at buffets and leaving little for anyone else, queue jumping, etc etc.. I see it constantly but if you let it grate you'll just end up bitter because selfish people are everywhere and they wont ever change... because they are selfish!!

Honestly the only thing we can do is always be considerate of others ourselves because the more we are,. they more we counteract the selfish people and the better society is for everyone.

Pay at pump. Use the pay at pump only ones and assume no one will go in and shop then.

DarkHollowTree · 02/10/2024 15:33

If she moved her car to free up the pump before paying to allowed someone else to use it, how would they know who's bill is who's?

Comefromaway · 02/10/2024 15:36

As will as the pump not being available until you have paid if the staff see you starting to move the car they may well shout over the tannoy not to leave until you have paid as they think you are going to drive off.

Arlanymor · 02/10/2024 15:40

The best way would have been to go in to pay for her petrol THEN move the car away from the pumps and start her shopping. No one else can use the pump until she has paid or if they do then the fuel goes on the same bill.

Pump was one you can only pay at the pump, so she could move after filling up. Pump is cleared for next user when driver presses yes or no for receipt - obviously times out after 30 seconds or so.

Best way is to pay at pump. Then she can move the car to a parking bay and leav3 the pump free for someone else.

MsMarch · 02/10/2024 16:29

I HATE pay at pump. For a start, first you have to freeze £100. Then, too often, it doesn't work properly or it's a bit dodgy. No thank you.

As for 2 carrier bags - please, I can fill two carrier mags at my local garage Tesco/Waitrose/M&S in about 2 minutes. But the time you've picked up a few ready meals, a bottle of wine and some fruit... bam, you're done.

Annoying though it is, it's oen of those things.

I do avoid one local place however as for reasons I simply do not understand, the cashiers are all insanely slow. I used to go in regularly as it was on my way to work and eventually I just had to stop - my blood pressure couldn't take it.

MoneyAndPercentages · 02/10/2024 16:40

Yes if she's paid at the pump she should move!

In major chains, pumps can 'hold' 2 transactions at once, so the next person can fill up. It just makes it complicated to try and remember how much you've put in and to be charged correctly 🫠

Where I live, Tesco is £120. I pay on credit card. Only time I don't do pay at pump is if I have a 5p off fuel coupon because I spent £50 in Tesco, £20 on clothing at Sainsburys etc.

Sometimes you can't move the car over to another parking place that easily and if you did you may get someone coming out thinking you've driven off without paying. Or you don't want to try and remember what you put in or any other number of reasons you end up sitting at the pumps whilst the person in front of you runs around doing a weekly shop and queuing up for the one assistant to serve everyone else
It's just a nightmare and been worse since the supermarkets decided to marry up the shops and make people pay a lot more for their bread and milk without putting much in place to avoid the queues

Mokel · 02/10/2024 16:58

Petrol station shops especially those with a supermarket in the area should only sell newspapers, popular mags - such as TV guides, Woman, sweets, drinks, cigs and a few car things like anti-freeze. Nowt else.

Anything else - go to the actual supermarket.

Those with a Tesco Express, Waitrose, Spar and other supermarkets - drivers need to move away from the pumps and park in the various bays dedicated to customers who are shopping there.

This.

Not this. The pump software can keep track of multiple amounts and transactions per pump. There's nothing wrong with filling up, parking up and leaving the pump for the next person. They could do this when I was working in a petrol station in the 1990s!

You may be right, but the owners will do what makes money. Unless we organise a global boycott or enough people vote with their feet, ultimately it won't change.

I always have to queue for our local station, but ultimately it's that or drive further away. So I wait!

TianasBayou · 02/10/2024 17:15

It's a convenience store. It's literally designed so you can shop and get petrol at the same time.

Do you actually know how long the driver was shopping for?

Choose a different pump or a less busy time to fill up.

The thing is once you have joined a queue, you have no idea how long the cars, vans are going to take. Both myself and woman pulled in at a pump at the same time. She parked further away from pump than I did and unable to get past her as pumps and cars to the side.
