Just USE THE DOORBELL

freespirit333 · 02/10/2024 09:22

Does anyone else have a doorbell (a Ring Doorbell no less) and people just don’t use it?! And use the knocker instead? It drives me nuts as 1. The knocker isn’t as loud and 2. If I’m unable to answer, if they use the ring doorbell, I can speak to them. Can’t do that if they knock!

Just missed a Royal Mail parcel, didn’t even hear anyone at the door. Checked my footage and no ring, just a half arsed tap with the knocker.

I've got the doorbell to send notification if someone is at the door (even if they don't ring the bell).
It was to solve the same problem.

YANBU. We have a knocker and people rarely use it. It's annoying because our house is old and just big enough that there are parts of the house where no one is going to hear a knock.

It makes no sense. Don't they want to get rid of their signed for post?

Do you mean they rarely use the doorbell?

I must do this! Although is it annoying? I can imagine getting a notification every 5 minutes if someone walks past.

You can set up notifications if someone is on your doorstep and I'd get rid of the knocker altogether to be fair, then they don't have the choice to use it.

Crispyturtle · 02/10/2024 09:28

Delivery drivers never use it, I think it must be because they are so pushed for time they don’t want to get into a long conversation with the homeowner over the doorbell about where to leave the parcel, it’s easier for them to drop & run.

Hadalifeonce · 02/10/2024 09:29

We don't even have a door knocker, only a bell; the number of times people don't use the bell drives me mad. If I am particularly peeved, I do sometimes lean out the door and say Oh, is the bell not working? And press it. Childish, I know, but it gives me a little satisfaction.

DinosaurMunch · 02/10/2024 09:30

We have a normal door bell and instead of using it, delivery drivers bang on the glass door and shout through the letter box. Why??

Depends on your house, I suppose.

I've set the zone for notifications to only be on my driveway and doorstep, so nobody just walking past on the road would set it off.

Go on zones and set it to fit. It's loads better, and I don't miss parcels now.

Prisonpillow · 02/10/2024 09:33

I can understand if they were just banging on the door but if you give them a knocker, it’s not beyond imaginable that some people will use it.

Bells break or run out of battery, I always choose a knocker if there is one because it always works. And I assume that people wouldn’t have a knocker that they weren’t able to hear.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 02/10/2024 09:34

YANBU. It's so annoying. I tend to know when someone is there as the dog barks, but I always think why didn't you ring the bloody bell?!

Fluffybuns88 · 02/10/2024 09:35

I have the opposite problem, my ring needs charging and I can't find the screwdriver, we've had a parcel for the new neighbours for two weeks, I'm sure they're just ringing the doorbell and leaving, you would think they'd click that there's no lights or sounds emanating from said bell and knock.....

ThatsGoingToHurt · 02/10/2024 09:36

I had a DPD delivery guy drive up silently in his electric van and attempt to deliver four times before I eventually lost my rag and put a post it note next to the door bell saying ‘press this’ with an arrow pointing towards the door bell.

DPD delivery guy would silently pull up down the road (so I couldn’t see him from my front window), walk up to the door and just expect it to magically open without knocking or ringing the doorbell. I rang up DPD to complain who said he was ringing the doorbell and attempting to deliver. I replied he wasn’t as I have a ring doorbell and it is wired into the mains so doesn’t go flat!

squashyhat · 02/10/2024 09:36

We don't have a doorbell, just a knocker which is huge (so they can't miss it) and lound enough to be heard all over the house. People still rap on the glass with their knuckles which can barely be heard.

HappiestSleeping · 02/10/2024 09:37

I asked a deliver driver once why he didnt ring. He said he didn't want to be recorded. I told him it detects movement, so he wasn't avoiding being recorded, just pissing off a customer.

He looked very sheepish.

SerenaWaldorf · 02/10/2024 09:38

Same problem here! We only have a ring doorbell, no knocker and still 9 times out of 10 delivery/takeaway drivers will just knock on the wood of the door rather than use the doorbell!

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 02/10/2024 09:41

People hardly use door bells. It's amusing when they say most don't work. It's a mains wired one, just try it. My doorbell can be heard all over the house but I can't hear a knock if I'm the attic room.

When we had a ring doorbell a few delivery drivers didn't like using it. I'm assuming they didn't want their picture taken which was amusing given it was motion censored to the gate opening.

Summerishere123 · 02/10/2024 09:50

I don't ring doorbells after 7pm at night in acse their are children in the house going to sleep.

Pushmepullu · 02/10/2024 09:50

We’ve got a doorbell, no knocker, and delivery drivers bang on the glass panel of the front door. I’m wondering what they would do if the glass broke.

takealettermsjones · 02/10/2024 09:51

People are beyond weird when it comes to doorstep behaviour! It needs to be studied.

I had a delivery driver knock on my door last week by banging (and I mean banging, I thought police or bailiffs 😂) in a slow but regular rhythm for about 30 seconds. It was absolutely bizarre, like she was practising a drum beat, and she only stopped when I opened the door. Absolutely crazy behaviour.

I've also had a couple of instances where they've not knocked at all and then stuffed the "you weren't in" card through the letterbox. My car was in the garage and I'm sure they just assume that two cars missing means no one's in and they don't bother to check. Each time I yanked open the door and called them out, and each time they've been adamant they've done nothing wrong. Infuriating.

2chocolateoranges · 02/10/2024 09:51

No ring doorbell here however we do have a normal door bell as we don’t hear anyone knock the door as we have a porch. Door bell is rarely used!

MaxandMoritz · 02/10/2024 09:53

They tell me they can't hear if my doorbell is ringing from outside so they thump on the door as well/instead.

Whereoneartharewe · 02/10/2024 09:56

Oh this used to infuriate me!

So last year when I got my new door installed I didn't even bother replacing the door bell. I've just got a door knocker now. And people actually use it. I don't always hear it but I'm no worse off than when I had a bell they didn't use and I don't have the irritation of the stupidity of people.

@WhatATimeToBeAlive

They probably feel they do need to once River has announced their arrival!

However given these 'ring' type doorbells, if no one appeared at the door I would if I wanted to speak to them

User478 · 02/10/2024 09:57

I've changed my name on Amazon to "Ring the Doorbell; do not not leave on the doorstep"

It usually works (as does claiming for every single thing that gets stolen because it was left on our doorstep which is on a busy shopping street)
