To Not Understand the Gas/Electric Bill Hike

AIBU here? Does anyone else understand it?

When our bills rose in 2022, we were told it was due to the Ukraine War..... but as far as i'm aware, the price of gas has now declined to pre war cost so why are we still paying such a high price?

I know that British Gas etc make huge amounts of profits and there are multiple threads on the pensioners losing their winter allowance but why aren't the Government or Ofgem stopping them from charging so much? Surely that would be a better solution rather than taking away their allowance? The allowance only exists because prices are so high......particularly the standing charge which in my opinion is absolutely ridiculous, surely we shouldn't have to keep paying these prices for years to come? Why is this being allowed? Unless i'm missing something?

It really annoys me that every summer, the prices drop down slightly and it's made to look as though we're saving when in fact, they just put them back up again come winter

AIBU or do I just not know enough about all of this?

I agree. The media has got us arguing about pensioners losing a hand out when we should be arguing about why they need one in the first place! We are being fleeced.

No one should make a profit from energy or water.

@ElfAndSafetyBored - I completely agree! it doesn't make any sense to me?

Something to do with gas purchases in bulk. The company (allegedly) stockpiles and we are paying prices based on the price of the existing stock at the time of purchase. Seems like poor management to purchase 5 years worth of gas at the height of the market but what do I know...

Grandmasswagbag · 23/09/2024 16:13

I was wondering the same. It feels like they've managed to legitimate price hikes. Surely there's no need for the raise when the suppliers are making absolutely record profits. I just don't understand it.

I could not agree more.

The company (allegedly) stockpiles and we are paying prices based on the price of the existing stock at the time of purchase.

Strange how they never seem to have any stock purchased at a lower price when they have a plausible reason to fleece us. Price increases always seem much more responsive to world events than price decreases.

Hence me saying “allegedly”. They are either clueless or lying. Or both…

Catza I understood. I was making a point not starting a fight.

Modernfamily2011 · 23/09/2024 19:16

@Catza Yes, this was mentioned on the Martin Lewis show around 2 years ago that they had bought supplies at the higher price but I don’t believe that now
it’s also very suspicious that it hasn’t been mentioned since, why are we paying such a high rate? Why is no one asking these questions?
Aren’t Ofgem supposed to be helpful in these situations? Seems to be like everyone is too busy making a profit! The same applies to the standing charges
I really thought a new Government might tackle this issue

We used 59p of energy yesterday , our standing charges are over 80p a day.

I didn't take your comment as starting a fight. I was commiserating with you. The whole utility thing seems like one big scam nowadays.

I wonder who is on the Ofgen and where they buy their clothes, go for holidays etc.
