Handed in my notice 1.5 weeks ago at the supermarket where I have been for almost 17 years. Not working the whole notice period as on annual leave (foreign holiday) for under 2 weeks.
Work has been awful with thanks to the horrible store manager who we had since the spring. He has made me cry, took advantage of my dyslexia and made our lives miserable. Will be the 10th - yes 10th colleague to leave under him due to his behaviour. A couple of them retired - even though they said they could work for another year - 18 months. But he has made them leave. A call to the pension provider so could pay out pension early that was needed. Plus another 4 are seriously considering leaving too.
We have raised grievances about him about various things and had meetings with other store managers and it didn’t progress. Head office think he’s a great manager. Great at making staff cry and leave but nowt else.
We are struggling staff wise. Fed up with the over reliance of me “Auburn can do my break” “Auburn could you do this Just Eat pick”. Then customers moan “you need more staff”.
“who wants to work for a bully manager?” Or “it’s not just here that has staff issues”. Customers need to understand that their rudeness and other negative attitudes are causing staff to leave across all retail. As have customers who worked in retail earlier in their career say to us “I’m glad I have left retail”, “couldn’t cope with all this rudeness now”. People don’t want to work being shouted at and treated like shit. I heard of a shop the other side of the county who had to postpone their opening as still had half of the posts to fill. As people don’t want to work in retail.
There is no benefit or gain to acting rude towards staff. You are just making them leave or contributing towards their MH problems. I’m on an increased dose of my antidepressants. It has helped but we should not be needing to take antidepressants for us to work. Those who are rude have never worked in retail or customer service. It shows. If customers weren’t rude - not as many staff would leave.
Every day when I work, I feel sick. See bully’s car in the staff car park fills me with absolute dread. When he’s not there- atmosphere is more pleasant. Rather work in a room full of my fears - blood, dead animals etc than with him.
Work with this store manager is miles worse than the fortnight or so before the first lockdown 4.5 years ago when shelves were stripped bare bar suntan lotion and champagne.
Want this time at work to fly by so I can board the plane and enjoy my holiday.
Got no job to come back to. But looking and applying for jobs. Money is ok.
